Question RE Fitting a barrel to a Stevens Action
Dec 31st, 2024 at 4:49pm

I have a Stevens 44 and a Stevens 44-1/2 action that I will be fitting new tapered octagon barrels to. Are there any tricks peculiar to fitting a barrel to these actions beyond the normal turning threading and relieving the shoulder to get the barrel to index properly/

Make sure all the pins and links are fitted, taking out any extra looseness in the linkage.

Fitting the breech block and machining the set screw pocket.

On the 44 it’s best if the breech block is pinched between the barrel and back shoulders for the strongest lock up.

On the 44 1/2 is the same, except the breech block raises at and angle.  It still needs to be pinched when the action is closed.

When I say pinched, I mean so the lever has a slight snap as it closes.

To index one full flat is .0078” off the shoulder. Partial index is easy to estimate.

I always like the last 1/2 flat “turn” to be slight wrench tight.

Its easy to make a snug slip fit drill bushing to fit the minor diameter of the barrel locking screw thread in the receiver. Drilling thru the bushing protects the existing threads.

Knock the threaded portion major diameter of the barrel shank threads down to .865-.870” so you are not fighting crest/root interference in the fitup.

Use a SHARP hss tool when cutting threads. Carbide will push off on light finish cuts and then “dive” past intended final cut.

Polish barrel threads with a BRITEBOY stick as you near finish pitch diameter.
