That's wonderful! Great use of a vintage single shot rifle. Congratulations!

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Nice doe! The .38-40 is underrated by some, but does the job well on deer at 100 yds. and under.

Nice deer and nice rifle! I've always been a big fan of the 38-40, I currently have a Colt Peacemaker, a Ruger Buckeye Special with the extra 10mm cylinder,an 1889 Marlin and a Uberti low wall. I always thought a 38-40 would make a nice 200 yard offhand cartridge with a 240-280 grain bullet but that 1 in 38" twist won't allow that.

A Roller strikes again!  The #5 is my favorite hunting rifle.  What bullet did you use in the 38-40?  Tom

Nice shootin'. What is your load for that feat? Powder... bullet?

Thanks for the info. I have a '92 Winchester that Bob Hoyt relined. Been using around 8 gr of either Unique or RedDot, or 18.5 gr 4227. My bullet choices have been 170 gr FPs I cast with an old Ideal reloading tool, some Markell 180 gr, and Missouri's .401" 170 gr, which being intended for .40 and 10mm autos, have no crimp grove.  I do have a FC die however.
Thought about using it for deer season but decided not. Your exploit gives me renewed hope. Smiley
