Anyone using IMR 4064?

I have some IMR 4064 I used in 30-06 loadings, but don't any longer.

My old Lyman Handbook says it was useful when high velocities are desired with cast bullets, but no data  Embarrassed

Supposed to be good in medium and large capacity cases.  I was hoping that might mean a 38-55, 40-65 or something similar.

Mike.

I shoot a lot of it in .308 Winchester.  41.4 grains under a Sierra 168 Match King is fabulous in my favorite .308 bolt gun.

I’ve shot 4064 with 405 grain gas checked bullets in .45-70.  52 grains shot the best in that rifle (1895 Marlin), but I wouldn’t try that load in a weaker action.  That gun shot better with lighter jacketed bullets so I abandoned the lead gas checked bullets.

Like the others I have used it in 30/06 & 30/40 successfully . 38/55 I use cast bullets at typical Black Powder velocity. My opinion 4064 not suitable for that application or others on the 38/55 case. 30/30 for example full load strong action, 3031 has always been preferred.

IMR 4064 was my first powder buy, in the 80's.  I used it in .243 and .308.  It was my most accurate powder with light bullets in the .243.  I shot one group at 100 yards that my little fingernail would cover!  Cheesy

Iv'e used it alot in .22-250 and .30-06 with jacketed with great results but when I tryed it with cast in a .45-70 I didn't care for the accuracy and harsh recoil even with low end trapdoor loads.

33.0 gr give excellent accuracy, in a 225 Win, on a HW that I had. My son has it now. Varget gave a shade better accuracy @ the same charge. Probably because it throws better charges. They are close in burn rate.

48.0 gr, 168 match, in a '06, gave 5/8 groups in a 7600 Rem pump. It's a old High Power match load.
