I have a few pounds now of Unique and would like to use it in a few cartridges 38/55 and 35/40 ... never used this powder before and see very old load data in some reloading books. Any thoughts of using Kapok over the powder?

Polyester/pillow stuffing would be better.

I've used many pounds of Unique, and never any fillers over the powder. A good starting point is 10.0 grs. with a 255 cast bullet. That will give around 1350 fps.

Agree with the other guys no fillers. Data from the old manuals usually good. I do make a list with loads from several manuals and compare looking  for errors. Never found one but some say early Lyman’s can have typos.
The 10 G charge 255 G bullet load is a good one, I use 8.4 same bullet for sub sonic gallery loads too.

Keep Unique on hand, you can load almost anything with it.

The last time I bought older powder (IMR in metal cans) at an auction two of the three cans were bad.  If it gets hot in storage it goes bad.   Open the can and redish dust comes out.  Not good.  Except for black powder, no more buying powder at auctions or yard sales for me.
