Case sizing problems

I have a 40/65 Meacham hi Wall and was given 50 new Starline 45/70 cases so today I decided to re size them to 40/65. y problem is this, I can't get them to go in deeper than half way before everything locks up solid. Thinking that this might be because the cases were extra hard I annealed them which hardly made any difference and they still won't go all the way in the die.
I would appreciate suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong.
I was lubeing the cases with RCBS case lube -2.
Cheers
Mike.

I too found it nearly impossible to swage .40-65 brass from .45-70 brass with a standard reloading press. Rather than resort to putting a cheater bar on the handle for more leverage (which should work if the press and its linkage is up to the task - not many are - and the press and its bench are well and truly anchored), I instead utilize a 5-ton arbor press. Cases go into the die like butter (and are removed via a push rod in the same press). I can envision a rig using a hydraulic jack to accomplish the same thing.

I sized 40 pieces of well worn 45-70 Win and R-P brass in a Redding 40-65 size die with no problems a few days ago.  I used Imperial sizing wax and had no issues.  It would typically take 3 passes in my Orange Crusher press, re-spreading the light coat of wax between each pass.  I have a set of RCBS Shiloh dies on the way, hopefully they will work as well.

Use Imperial sizing wax which Jack also uses and do multiple passes as Jack suggests.

It is much more effective for squeezing down cases than many of the traditional case lubes most people use.
However you can not just press/size them with one pass.
Push down until it gets a bit tight.
Relube the case and take another pass.
May take three passes to fully squeeze extra wide case webs.

Only a slight film of this wax is required on the case down to the case head.

When you anneal only do the necks.
Do not anneal the web or lower portion of the case.

I have done several hundred starline 45-70 to 40-65 cases.  I too use Imperial sizing wax (a very light coating is all you need).  I first anneal the neck area of each case.  I use my older RCBS Rock-Chucker press.  I adjust the die so when I operate the press's handle, I am using the bottom 1/4 of the stroke.  It has more mechanical advantage.  It takes about 3 passes of screwing the die in to complete the job.

Thanks for the swift replies. I think a large part of my problem is that my loading press ( Lee.) is not mounted onto a strong workbench allowing quite a bit of flexing.
I will see if I can source some of the Imperial sizing die wax and try again using someone elses press that may be more firmly mounted than mine.
Thanks again.
Mike.

I found out early on of you are going to be repurposing cases into something smaller a big old honking press is in order. I have a Rock Chucker but as stated sometimes it is a multiple stage process.

I made up a bunch of .40-65 brass from .45-70 decades ago using my Rock Chucker press and Imperial sizing wax. I could do it in two steps to full length size the cases, but three steps did it without as much effort from my right arm.

Have found a thin film of regular automotive chassis grease works pretty well for tougher resizing.
Soapy water clean afterward.

If you have the seating die, and it is the full case type, run it through that first. The few thousands difference in diameter makes a huge difference.

If you have a 45-70 sizing die. you might try sizing them in that first to make sure they are not starting oversized.

Mike.

If it doesn't work out, try using a shim under the case head and above the shell holder.  This will take out any slack that is in the shell holder by raising the case up.  I used a .008' and it worked fine with some fired 45-70 SL cases I turned into 40-65.  Once I got the order of new cases from SL, I found a RCBS forming die and used it.

Cheers,
Steve

Mike, if you can't find Imperial wax I find that lanolin grease works just as well. I've used this to form .33 WCF & .38/56 WCF from .45/70 brass.

You might try Groom and Clean hair tonic. It is very slick and water-soluble for cleanup.
