Lately in this and other fora (having to do with reloading) the process of depriming cases then repriming them, usually at the shooting bench for us, becomes a major concern.  If we really go “old school” and use the same case repeatedly it is vital that we have a way to exchange a fresh primer for the old one quickly and efficiently.  The practitioners of Black Powder Cartridge shooting like to deprive their cases as soon after shooting as possible so they can be tossed in a rinse to remove corrosive fouling.

I first learned the game with a Jake Simmons copy of the Pope style re- & de- but over the years have observed a wide variety of other techniques.  I’ve included a picture of 4, the Simmons, one by David Arawinko, one from Ballard, and a tool to decap only.  Would anybody else like to chime in with their particular favorite tools or methods?

Only one I use, and my favorite is my Jerry Cleave tool. Also similar to Simmons, but originally made by Jerry's uncle Charlie Poole. Not sure, but I think Charlie's tool predated Jake Simmons tool?
Jerry built my tool to do about 12 different cartridges by swapping sleeves on the decapping rod, and changing shell holders.

I also own some others that work well like my Wolf copy of a Schoyen tool.

Another Schoyen copy by a maker in California I can't locate.

Here's a bench type Ideal.

I have 4 or 5 Ballard tools for re-decapping, but only used them to try out not regular use. They're for too slow compared to others.
I also have some oddball re-decappers that I don't know who made them. One looks much like a blacksmith or home built copy of the Chick-Poole-Simmons tool. It came with a set of tools I bought and includes a little powder measure with glass bottle hopper. Also unknown maker, but likely the same guy who built the re-de tool.

Unknown maker, only decaps.

Ballard tools at the bottom.

Rodney you just jogged my memory showing the last decappers. I have a couple of those Frankford Arsenal decappers the military used! One of mine is still in it's original wooden carrying case.
I believe they were only made for .30-06 and .45ACP, but will work for some other cartridges.

Yeah, they work with 3040 Kraig. I took this old no finish one and made the brass mandrel for 45,40,38 to use for decapping at the range, about as convenient as any way I have found. Thanks for starting this I like seeing all the re and decappers.

A couple of re-decappers; the first one is by Otto Bremer, the second is by Bill Ballard.

Here are a few more.  The collection of shop made CBE (crude but effective) decappers started with me making a copy of one featured in a Midway video on BPC shooting.  The brass re/decapper is a Russ Weber design.  Then thereis the not so handy Dandy with an adapter for standard RCBS shell holders.

The Frankford Arsenal de-recapper mentioned by Vall and Rodney. Works for a bunch of cartridges. Not shown is the original instruction booklet that came with it. Dated 1909.

Many people think of them as decappers only but will re-cap also by removing the decapping pin and engaging the seating anvil by screwing it down. Kind of awkward for re-capping but works.

I use my Ideal decapper a lot at my bench. It's marked ".30-45" which I interpret as being .30-06 as it works perfectly for that. Functions good with .32-40 also, but not well with .30-40 Krag (rim too wide to fit in the shell holder). If it's mounted vertically it can also re-cap, for which task removal of the decapping rod makes it handier.

I have yet to understand why everyone ignores the old Lyman 310 tool decapper and recapper.  It gives an excellent feel when seating primers, and decapps well also. Wyoold

Wyoold   I agree wholeheartedly with you. A lot of old short range benchrest shooters used and still use the 310 tool for de and repriming. Many used the Belding and Mull powder measure as well.
