Welding ? contact info ?

I find myself needing some welding done.  I could do it myself, but would just as soon talk to/hire someone who is way better and more experienced than me.  I tried restorativewelding but went to wrong site.  Anybody got any advise or leads?  or somebody who could do this type of work?  thanks in advance

Peter at restorative welding (815-732-1249) is a great source and does very good work.  But, depending on what you are wanting done, laser might be a better way to go.

I agree with Bob. It it can be done, Peter can do it.

Tony would also be my choice for laser.  The work he has done for me  was really nice.

This is laser.  I’m sure others can give more detail than I.  This was to repair a messed up Ballard in both lockup and firing pin strike. I ask for enough weld so I could finish at .014, and with a material that was hard, but not so hard that it couldn’t be machined.  I’m sure there’s some heat but not enough to cause problems and no cratering around the edge of the weld.  Worked perfect for this Ballard.  Tony South did the work.

As said before, it depends on what you are doing, each type has its place.

At my last employ we used laser welding on missile components. Robot welder of company design and processes. No heat and very precise but also very expensive. Was told the machine and tooling was close to a million dollars.

I assume that laser is for smaller, more precise less volume situation.  I;m thinking greater volume and grinder finish up.  Maybe heat treating -case hardening as well.

I don’t know how large a volume can be done with laser, but the small and precision stuff for sure.  Also, where low heat is preferred.  While I haven’t done it yet, a barrel with a damaged area, pits or scars, would be an example for low heat application repairs on guns.

I see no reason why, with the proper filler, heat treating or case hardening wouldn’t work.  I know Peters work is no problem for case hardening as long  as he knows your intentions.  But, this would really be a question for the person doing the welding.

school me up -what is laser welding?

Well, these days, that covers a lot of very interesting territory.

Traditionally, laser welding uses a laser beam (or beams) to apply specifically controlled photon energy to a material in order to weld it together.

With laser light, you can manipulate the amount of energy on target very precisely and even change the amount of energy applied to the target over time to give you a very precise weldment and heat affected zone.  Too, there is no need for a filler material and you can weld in butt, lap, and fillet styles.  You can also control the weld environment to a point where you can truly weld dissimilar materials together.

Nowadays there is an even more interesting form of laser welding where the laser not only creates the weld pool but can also feed a filler material into that pool like traditional welding except that by using a laser you can control your heat affected zone unlike any other type of welding.  This allows for some amazing restorative work that was very difficult to accomplish in the past.

Hope this gives you an overview of the process.

ascast: as the OP of this thread.  I hope you don't mind if I tag along on this as I have a project that requires an incredibly small but very detailed weld build up...on a concave surface.

My gunsmith over cut something by about a half a millimeter and I need to build that very small area back up so I can recut it.  He was very frustrated by the project and is not interested in re-tackling it...so I have to go it alone.

Would anyone mind if I described this project in more detail?  I know I am new here so I don't want to overstay my welcome so early in the game.

I would start a new thread here in the Gunsmithing about your project. Folks here will be very interested in it and offer good advise if you need it.
