G. Bailer Sharps

My more or less local gunshop has a converted Garret Sharps percussion rifle for sale. According to the shop the work was done by a "G. Bailer" but I have not been able to find anything about him. It is in 45-70 with a 30" barrel and weighs about 13 lbs. There are some things that indicate he was not very familiar with Sharps rifles like the "relief" he did on the forend for the take-down lever and the form of the barrel at the front of the receiver.

That Sharps is a real turd. What you need to be looking for is a nice old Ballard.  Smiley

There was a man in Germany (I do not know his location there) who was building a very high quality rendition of
the Freund 1874 Sharps rifle. His name is Markus Mull
and he was in business as late as 2003. The examples on his website were as good a quality as Shiloh or C. Sharps.

I can’t speak to the quality of the workmanship except to note the step down where the barrel enters the receiver looks pretty strange to me.  Also, from the scratches and dents in the butt stock, it looks like it’s been mistreated or at least treated carelessly. Unless the bore is perfect and the price is very low, I’d be afraid of what I’d find when I got it home.

Yes the Hartford collar configuration is wrong and it being a "saddle bar" style rifle the barrel is way too long.

I have not heard that name in a long time and doubt he made many guns. None are currently listed in any of the sale/auction sites. Best searches are done on gunfinder.de, it pulls from several sites.

Searching hard for Moll I came across this posted in March 2007:

"Der Markus Moll ist mit Vorsicht zu genießen, er kassiert gerne Geld bringt die Leistung dann aber nicht oder erst Jahre später. Ich weiß von was ich hier schreibe."

Translation: Markus Moll should be treated with caution, he likes to collect money but then the performance doesn't pay off or only years later. I know what I'm writing here.

Update: just found this. I thought I remembered his rifles having a purple (red) color to the bluing. This one is just a bit over $10,000.

This is the Builder that I was talking about.
That rifle looks great! The “purple” I believe is a browning process instead of blueing.
$10,000.oo is a bit over my budget, do they do any long distance trading?!?
In 2003 you could have one for around $3500.00.
I see Richard McKinney has closed the doors on his 
Business “ Schuetzen  Gun Company”.
I can imagine in 20 year's his 1874 Freund Sharps Rifles will 
double or triple in value too. They started at around $5000.00.
As far as “waiting an eternity” for a rifle builder to complete a project, I can name 2 or 3 here in the States that fit that same category.

Marcus Moll was indeed making exact copies of Freund Improved Sharps, and prices were pretty high, but compared to originals pretty low. I have a friend who has a Sharps and needed parts for it a couple decades ago and got them from Moll. No idea how long it took to get the parts, but he said the parts were excellent fit and finish.

Just in case anyone ever sees it I built a Freund Sharps in the late 1980's. (never took pics of it or they are lost) It was built on a Sharps action casting made by Pete Allen foundry whose biggest business was casting many many parts for the muzzleloader actions, buttplates and locks. I took the casting and made the modification for the breechblock to rock back when lowered and cam the cartridge into the chamber when raised. The rifle was in 45-70 with full oct Badger barrel and with very nice American walnut stocks. I used it for a few years at the Buffalo shoots held annually here in Minnesota up at the Gopher rifle club. I sold it to the guy who use to own White Horse bullets in the late 1990's . What happened to it after he died I do not know. So this is just a heads up, it is out there someplace. If you see it of course I would like to know.
