bobw,

It seems I may have ruffled some feathers over at the doublegun site when I posted about the astronomical cost some people charge for fitting a stock. I was then lambasted for the comments I made. 3000.00 is a bit steep in my opinion. 60 to 80 dollars an hour? Still is but that is neither hear or there. Lot of back and forth went on for a while but it eventually calmed down. The people I did contact said they were backed up or just refused to take the work. I was able to find someone and after a 30 minute phone conversation he said he would do the work at a much less amount previously quoted. I googled his business and it had many good reviews while other shotgun sites not so much. I tool it all with a grain of salt. He now has the shotgun and has started work on a pattern. Guess I will get what I get. All I wanted was a decent stock at a reasonable cost. I mean jeezzz I made space shuttle parts  at one time but I was never paid 60 to 80 dollars an hour. I guess I am just an ol cheap skate in a lot of peoples eyes lol... Be interesting to see what I get and I will be sure to post the results good or bad.

Bobw,
That blank looks great! You’re right, that’s exactly what this project needs. I’m anxious to see the fore arm!

Good cutting!

Those hourly rates might seem high for someone working for a company, but for someone whose self employed like most gunsmiths and stock makers are that's pretty reasonable prices.  Especially so if they have the talent to do stocks without having a pattern to duplicate.
I'm terrible at building stocks from scratch, and always have to send my wood to someone who can duplicate it first.

I followed the whole thread as it played out.  I was at least one of the people that said that forum can be rough. Seems like some of those guys are looking for a fight!

I’m really glad this forum is well managed and appreciate the moderators.  They do a great job!

Tom, with the three blanks he sent 4 forearm blanks.  I really haven’t looked closely at them but they do have nice dark minerals streaking in them and some curl in a couple.

I peruse the Doublegun forum almost daily, but rarely look beyond the one area dedicated to single barreled rifles. It gets very little posts, but mostly it's pretty gentle to each other. There have been a couple guys over the years who have had dust ups, but I just put them on "ignore" so I wont see anything they post.

Here's the forearm wood I received.

And then the other two blanks.
The smaller one I'm showing both sides, which shows what Vall mentioned earlier.  Blanks can be inconsistent between the two sides.  The first side is stunning, the other side isn't bad but I'm not a big fan of straighter grain.

And now I'm off to the stock work and started the heading up of the wood to the action frame.

First is the opening up of the slot for the top tang.  This blank is a tight fit for the stock design I am using, I need to be dead on with this starting inlet.  So I set the blank up in my mill and plowed out the rough inlet at the angle I need to keep it on target. This also aligns the frame with the the back of the stock at the buttplate.  This inlet bottom is the finished surface, which gives me the correct vertical angle on the blank, but the width is about .020 under sized. If I had more room on the blank, I could have just chopped this tang inlet in, which is what I use to do.

The next two pictures are just showing working the tang straight back.  This was very easy and took around 30 minutes but now things will really slow down.

Since I would like to incorporate a cheek rest on this stock and the blank it fairly thin at 2 1/8 inches, I have the top tang inlet moved as far right on the blank as I can get it.  You can see this in the pictures.

Now that all the above has been worked out, once the blank is  attached to the frame and the buttplate is on, it should be a fairly simple job in the shaping of the stock.

Is that a powder you use to coat the tangs for checking the inletting Bob? Or what are you using?

Yea Mr bobw you warned me. I hope it is all in the past now. I agree the folks here a a bit more civil and will bend over backwards to help you. I am testament to that. That is some beautiful wood. I would be scared witless to put a chisel into that. I guess when you know what you are doing it is just another stock. Wish I had the skills to do it even just for myself.

Bobw,
I’m guessing but I think the darkest of the four forearm blanks will be the winner!

And thats what separates you, Bob, from most of the rest of us.

After rereading that, I think “simple“ was a bad choice for a word, sound arrogant. Embarrassed

I should have said “straight forward”.
