This first picture is of the rollers the lever and main spring/hammer springs run against.   They were simply turned on the lathe.  Still need heat treating.

The work of making springs is now in process.

The second picture is the trigger spring, which is the first and easiest to make.  The material is 1075 flat spring stock .035 thick.  The screw is shop made and needs slotting yet, but I need to know how much clearance I have with the main spring first, I might need to reduce the thickness.

Continuing with springs, the main spring is next.

Since the original gun has a straight lower tang, verses mine with a pistol grip style, the original spring style will not work.  I looked at several way to do this but settled on just incorporating a riser into the spring base, then shaping the spring accordingly to engage the hammer.  This riser gives me clearance over the top of the trigger spring screw.  If this does not work then I will go to a more complicated style.

These first 3 pictures are machining the step into the spring.  Tough to see in these pictures but I am also shaping thickness of the spring, to a taper, from the base to the tip.

The fourth picture  is the spring nearly complete.  Note the cupped shape of the base.  This is being fitted to the curve of the tang.  I also make these springs a little long and thicker for later fitting and adjusting.  This spring is being made for 1080 steel.

The last picture is both springs installed but the main spring still needs bent and fitted to the hammer.

The trigger spring comes heat treated and ready to use, as is,  unless I anneal it.  I used it as is, and simple drilled the screw hole and shaped to what I wanted

The main spring, and the next spring for the lever, will both need heat treating and tempering.

I had made the springs and heat treated them but when the main spring was tested it broke.  Don't know why because I did both springs the same way, same material, and the lever spring is fine.  I'm thinking, I did work it quite a bit while trying to get the bend correct for the rebound feature to work and this may have setup unseen fractures that fail in the test.  The first spring was made from 1080, but I decided to make the second from 1075.  Both materials have work well for me, but I found a piece of 1075 I had ordered and it was the correct thickness for this spring.

So while the heat treating was being done on this new spring,  I decided to rough out the shape of the lever since I had been procrastinating on it.

So, back to my manual CNC machine.  Since this is the final working lever, all the machining at the front, was completed earlier for the operation of the action.  All I am showing here is the shaping of the trigger and finger loop.

In this first picture I have completed the roughing out of the inside of the trigger loop and the front of this loop.  When I do this I set the depth of the cut .015 off the mill table.  The thin flange that is left is cleaned up with files.  This flange can be seen in these pictures.

For the inside of the finger loop I drilled several holes to remove much in the wast material and then milled out the rest, leaving a margin for the final pass.  Second picture.

The third pictures show this margine that was left.

Fourth shows what the inside of the loop looks like when completed on the mill.  This surface still needs cleanup and  final shaping, which is done with files.

Last picture is showing the lever completed to this point and assembled to the frame.

I now have the new heat treated main spring in and working.  The rebound feature also appears to be working well.

But, I had been having issues with he firing pin hanging up on the hammer when closing the action.  When the action is open, the breech block lower end could move around slightly and when closing would allow the firing ping to hook the hammer right where the main spring comes through at the front of the hammer.  By making a modification to the breech block link rear shoulder to tighten up the looseness somewhat, modifying the way the firing pin is retracted by the link, shaping of the back of the firing pin and shaping the nose of the spring it now seems to be working very well.

While there is still a lot to do with this action, like installing the lever spring, shaping, refining and polishing, the action works.  Yesterday I was finally able to load a primed only round, and fire it using the trigger and it work just fine!  The only issue is I need to move the rebound sear notch ahead slightly.   When the hammer rebounds it is just short of catching it, if I just touch the hammer it drops in.  Although, it might just need some polishing in order to work, because prior to the live firing it had worked fine.

Thanks Jordan and everyone else for their comments.

Been pushing to get this thing working, and somewhat presentable, so it can lay on my table at the Colorado collector show in Greeley.  If the owner of the original will allow it, I may have it on my table also.

Whatever shape or progress you get done, I sure hope to look at it at Greeley! As always, excellent work Bob!

I will test it for safety sake soon, but since the wood is still to be attached and shaped, any target work is a ways off.

Started shaping the top and front of the frame.

Some pictures showing the progress.

Bob do you plan on ultimately having this gun engraved?

There’s better than a 50% chance I will.  I have another completely hand built gun being engraved now.

Interesting you ask this.  Do you see something I have missed?

Bob, your hand-filed curves always flow so beautifully.  I swear, even given your very considerable experience, either a person has  a natural penchant for that kind of work or he/she doesn't.

No Bob I dare say you haven’t missed a thing and I wouldn’t be capable of spotting it if you did. It is looking great.
