Rechambering 22 Short Winder Musket to LR

I don't have any information about the twist on a Winder, but it might not be fast enough for Long Rifle. But I have a couple of pristine Winders that would be more useful in LR. Has anyone tried this to see if the accuracy with LR is satisfactory? Maybe lighter weight LR bullets would stabilize. If it doesn't work then they could be relined.

I don't suppose there is a source of 22 long ammo? I think the bullet weight was the same as 22 short.

It’s not difficult to measure the barrel twist with a cleaning rod that has a ball bearing handle.  1 in 20” won’t shoot well in .22 LR and 1 in 24” will probably be even worse.  Depending on what source you look up, you’ll find references to Winder .22 Shorts being 1 in 20” or 1 in 24”.

.22 Long ammo isn’t hard to find.  However, not any cheaper than .22 short.

I'll save you worry if yours is like mine and didn't get the memo about the twist being wrong for lr ammo. Mine shot regular stuff with acceptable accuracy, but it really to a shine to the zippy ones with the light bullets. Factory sights and a beer cam at a hundred yards was simple. A playing card mostly was smacked and something the size of a sitting jack rabbit was almost boring.

I buy from SG Ammo all the time.  Not a scam site.  Very reputable.
