1885 Highwall Receiver

Hello,
I recently acquired a Highwall Receiver (serial #45xxx) complete with the stock and butt plate.  My intention was to match it up with a .935 threaded Highwall barrel in 45-70.  However the threaded portion of the receiver is smaller than the .935 diameter.  Does anybody know what the exact diameter and threading would be?  Was this smaller stub used on smaller calibers?  Would I be limited to smaller calibers with this receiver?   Thanks, Jon D

Yes, winchester used smaller barrel threads for smaller calibers.  You're not necessarily limited to smaller calibers, but if you use larger ones the remaining metal in the barrel gets pretty thin.  With modern barrel steel, may not be a problem, but to be safe, I'd not do it.  Just locate a large shank receiver instead.

What are you trying to accomplish?  I have a 45-70 Highwall original (rebored from 38-55 recently so perfect bore) that is surplus to my needs.  I might be interested in a trade for your small shank receiver with a bit of cash to cover the value difference; I have a small shank barrel that I could use on it.

My first high wall was a small shank set trigger receiver with a no name .22 barrel that would not shoot well at all.  I gave it to John King to redo.  I had a Badger 45 barrel and some Treebone stocks drop shipped to John and he made a 45-90 out of it. His only comment was that I should only use BP.  That was thousands of shots ago with no issues.  I recently acquired another small shank action and unless I can find a decent barrel greater than 25 caliber, I will probably have my .32 BRC barrel fitted to it.

Any idea of the shank dimensions and the threads per inch?
