Remodel BSA Martini?

I have been looking for a 22 for a bit since my son "inherited" my CZ 452HB. Honestly, he had fired it much more than I so I thought I would just give it to him now so he has a good gun to go with his buddies on their jack hunts in the AZ desert.

Anyway, I need a replacement and haven't found anything that trips my trigger so to speak. I want something I can walk with and also use for club shoots. I have noticed there are a lot of ads for used BSA international rifles at decent prices. Of course as they are stocked they are not something to walk with. I am thinking I would repalce/remodel the stocks, shorten the barrel to 20-21 inches, remount the front sight base, and install a scope. I would use the scope for hunting and use the irons for shooting at the Verein.

Has anyone modified one of these for use as a hunting rifle?

Sounds like a lot of work-you might be able to get what you want with an earlier BSA martini. The models 8 and 13 come to mind. You can check out the entire BSA line and a host of other 22 lr target rifles on ukrifleman.org. An added bonus is the earlier BSA models sell for close to half of what an International sells for. Good luck on your search.

I'll second the motion for an earlier BSA. A Model 12, 12/15, or 15 will fill the bill as-is without any serious modifications. While not exactly featherweight they aren't objectionable to carry, at least I don't think so. If you can manage a scoped Model 70 or a Springfield all day you can manage one of these. On top of that they tend to be wonderfully accurate with good triggers - you'll be competitive in club shooting.

That is a international mark 3 . If looking at one of those 
Styles I would go with mark 2. Thayer are available with either 
25” or 29” factory barrels. Very accurate. But not the lightest 
Models available. The 12 or 15 is definitely lighter.

Most of the used Internationals are priced about $800. I have seen a couple of left hand versions at $450 and the Mark 3 is $475.

The auction for the Vickers-Armstrong is still at 1 bid (about $1.10) and ends Sunday....

BSA Martini International MKII with a 22 LR RKS gain twist bull barrel.

Extension bloop tube to extend sight radius to use Anschutz sights.

8 to 30X Bausch & Lomb scope with sunshade on 3/8" dovetail base.

BSA Model 4 .310 Cadet rebarrelled to .218 Bee with Bausch & Lomb 4X scope for hunting small game.

3/8" dovetail base allows me to use either a scope or Anschutz sights.

.218 Bee Loads:

50 grain Speer HP "TNT"
12.7 grains H4198 2,442 fps

52 grain Sierra HP Match
13.1 grains H4198 2,510 fps

Some of the Aussie boys have posted pictures of beautiful rifles that they have built on the smaller Martini actions. I think Aussie_Hunter may be one. Somebody else comes to mind but I can't think of his name. Maybe  somebody else remembers. Go to Rifle Photos and scroll through that.Singleshotsam has a beauty.

If you decide to use a BSA International, I'd recommend the Mark 2. It has the threaded action and easy trigger adjustment. Attached is a photo of one with a barrel extension attached to a 20" Anschutz barrel.
The downside of the International sporting rifle is it's weight. A plus is the ejector.
Of the small sized Martini actions, I think that the BSA Cadet actions are your best bet. They use the Francotte patent inner frame, which makes takedown for cleaning easier, than the small standard Martini. They will require a little more work to achieve International level accuracy but are light in weight.
