This info was in my sale add and will go away soon.  I decided to recreate some of it here for posterior.

One issue with Ballard seaters is that the case really needs to be screwed on to the seater body like Russ Weber made them because the portion of the rim that contacts the extractor needs to be removed and a part of the body relieved to allow the extractor to pivot back.  If not the hammer is higher when the extractor is fully forward.  I suppose I could make a cam seater and leave it square far enough back to have a flat attachment point where the owner could mount a strap (spring loaded steel) that would attach to a stud added to the receiver.  I don’t really see a market for that though.  The stirrup style seaters work fine with no modifications.  The brass hook for that style would be more suited to a casting than the machining process.  The one I have is not perfect as it has a tendency to want to come up and I have to hold it in with my left hand from under the receiver.

Many years ago I bought a half dozen cast brass hooks to use to make Ballard breech seaters in the For Sale section here. I made up two, and let some friends buy the others.
Mine is a "plow handle" style that works well with a iron sighted gun, or a scope. It has lots of leverage and seating bullets is a snap with it.

Then in a conversation with Jerry Cleave one day he mentioned he had a Ballard tool his uncle Charlie Poole had made based on a Schoyen breech seating tool and I asked if he could make me a copy. He agreed to make it, and said later it was a very difficult project to build, and he wouldn't ever do another. It also works extremely well and I love using it! It is a beautiful tool like everything Jerry makes!

Thanks to Vall’s help, I made a copy of his for my Ballard.

And, I can confirm the work it takes to make one.

The cartridge case usually doesn't ride in anything, and enters the chamber the same as it would if the cartridge had a fixed bullet seated in it. But in the case of a breech seated bullet the bullet is dropped in the chamber, and then the tool into the action and handle pulled to push the bullet into the bore. Tool is then removed and charged/primed case is inserted behind the bullet. Most set their seating depth of the bullet to just deep enough for the case mouth to almost touch the bullet base.

Jack, We need to credit "Smoke" for the first Russ Hooks seater.

The push bar, or whatever you call it, and the dummy case ride in the shallow channel.  I’ve never seen one with a rail/guide slot.

Joe or Jack, how is the bar on top the frame held to the gun on the Russ Hooks seater?  Is it a extension of the scope base?

It is screwed in to the existing rear scope base holes.  Not sure on his whether he just uses longer screws for the scope base or has the piece drilled and tapped for a base.  Most likely the former.

Very simple, but appears with the vertical handle it might not work with a scoped Ballard?
