Schoyen re- and decapping tools
Oct 3rd, 2024 at 2:13pm
Print Post
From what I have been able to gather, Schoyen made re- and decappers in a couple of different styles, but I’ve never seen examples of definite designed versions.  Does anyone have documented re- and decapping tools from Schoyen they are willing to share in photos?
TIA ~ Froggie

Schoyen made two styles and in a previous post you made Rodney Storie posted a picture of 5 tools, and I think the one at the top left of those 5 tools in either a Schoyen, or a copy of it. I own two Werner Wolfe copies that look like that and his were copies of SSchoyen's.

John Dutcher's book on Ballard rifle history shows anther that is much smaller and lighter, with a nice curvy body. It's said to be one Schoyen and AW Peterson designed and sold. I'll see if I can take a picture of the page and post it.

Thanks Vall. In my fevered amphibian brain I seemed to recall dimly that the unit made about 20 years ago by David Arawinko was a copy/adaptation of another design by Schoyen or Schoyen and Petersen.  It is unusual because of its finger loop which some people like, but others… well not so much. I have to spend some time readjusting after using my tools from Jake Simmons because it’s held in a complete different way.  Was this one in the Storie post or the Dutcher book and I’ve just forgotten it?

PS I can’t figure out how to post this picture… my iPad takes images with too many pixels and won’t let me reduce it.  Anyway, the unit has a brass body with the finger loop and a curved arm to actuate the mechanism to de- or recap the case.  Sound familiar?

Schoyen's other re-decapping tool didn't have a loop. The handles were very lightweight and shaped like a old pair of pliers, but came to a smaller point at the end of each handle. The main body was round and sat vertical above the two handles. They were like most old tools caliber specific, so had to buy them for the cartridge you wanted to prime.
