ONE COULD ORDER A 438 SCOPE WITH THE STANDARD MOUNTS(CHEAP), OR THE BETTER(STEEL), AT EXTRA COST. I HAVE HAD QUITE A NUMBER WITH EITHER.

New home for this scope.  Sets a bit higher than I like but it's workable.  Made the rear block so I could use existing hole in the barrel.  This little Steven's Marksman had many issues when I got it.  It ended up with a liner to correct a chamber someone messed up and had what looked like a nail for a firing pin.  For a boys rifle is shooting pretty darn good.  Fun gun.  This is one that will end up with the grandson.....or granddaughter.

Yes it does. Small, about 1/8 inch.

Is the 438 considered an 8 power?
Bob

The 438 is either a 3X or 4X.  The 3X is early and was replaced with the 4X.

If you need mounts, I have a lead on some hi-lux repro mounts. These are the gen1 mounts that come on their 8x unertl clone. A buddy of mine upgraded his mounts to the gen 2 and would probably sell the gen 1 mounts.

I’m good on mounts but thanks for the offer.

She’s shooting pretty good as is.

Just recently received my 438-FIELD and was very disappointed.  Seller doesn't accept returns and this wasn't exactly cheap.  There is no lens at the objective end.  Scope is quite clear without a lens up there, but there is no reticle????  Isn't there suppose to be an objective lens with a reticle mounted~?  How and where is the reticle located~?  What appears to be a retainer does not move, so if it is removable it's threads must be severely corroded~?
What do I need to do to correct this~?  Who can correct this~?

The screw on the right side of the turret, is the one that holds the X hair cell and adjust it for level.

The cell is not threaded in, it just slides and rotates.

What did you decide on for mounts?

There are tons of mounts on Ebay but never a description of what they a correct for.  They all sell for around $20.  I called MVA and bought a set for my 1885 Lo-Wall with a #1 barrel for $40 plus around $5 shipping.

Sam, yes, it’s a 3/4 inch tube.  I’ll give MVA a call and see what they have.  Thanks.
Bob

MVA has provided several parts for my early 1885 lo-wall  Winchesters (mfg 1890 and 1892).  They're very helpful and their parts are "top drawer"~!
I also recently bought a repro 1885 made for WRA by Miroku.  I bought it specifically because it has an MVA vernier tang sight mounted.  It's a beautiful precision piece.  They're not giving their stuff away, but I have to say it's the best I've seen~!

I search about 3 times a week on Ebay for external adjustment mounts for old target scopes, and the few that do come up are always $200-$400 or more. I've never seen even a front mount, let alone a rear mount for $20. I wouldn't car what scope they were for if they were external adjust mounts for $20 I'd grab them quickly!
Are you confusing mounts for bases?

A gentleman on this forum had a front mount, that he replaced because it had a small issue, but it seems to be working fine for now.  I got the new stop ring from MVA.
Bob

I now have a second scopes to restore, same model as this one.  They are a fun diversion from building rifles!  Have planned rebuild of a #4 rolling block that will probably get it.

Bob,
I have prints of Pope scope mounts I built, you could tackle this.  It's a small diversion that becomes an all consuming obsession...

That small diversion, that become all consuming, is what scares me! Grin   I have too much of that already.

But, I’m sure I will need the prints someday!
