Ok I have a 1902 roller in 7x57 that I re barreled. Cut the extractor recess based on the orig. stub. Problem is when I open the block at about 1/3 of the roll the extractor will visibly pull to the left away from the cartridge and miss it entirely. All the bearing surfaces on the extractor and spring it rides on are square and the retainer screw is in place and in good condition. It is driving me crazy. It is all that is standing in the way of having this rifle done. Anyone else ever had this problem or know of a fix for it?

I suffered thru this when a fellow gave me a rifle to “fix” for him.  It had, like your rifle, been rebarreled to a rimmed caliber, rather than the original rimless.   The extractor on  these rifles not only tilts from side to side, but the axis of the extractor is rotated to a lower position when operating the breech block.  

I made several other extractors (thicker) and with  a differently-shaped extractor pawl.  Finally got it to work, but if doing it again, would machine the breechblock so that the extractor rotation is concentric with the axis of block rotation. One also needs to limit the rotation of the extractor with respect to the rotation of the breech block.

Best not to try to convert the later RB’s from rimless to rimmed cartridges.  It’s a fairly easy fix on the models with a sliding rather than rotating extractor

Mr Taylor,
All your observations are true and this one is just as you stated and has not been modified. I am first going to try a thin metal shim and if that doesn't work at the risk of breaking it (it is a spring after all) I am going to attempt to bend it a little. It won't take much and if it does break hopefully I can get another.
