How to polish a chamber?
Sep 7th, 2024 at 4:45pm
Print Post
Back to my problem child. The Browning seems to shoot better with the badger barrel back on it, but the previous owner used a tap to get a stuck case out, and put some marks in the chamber apparently. 60 shots, and none stuck, but I'd like to clean this up.

Anyone have any tips to clean up the chamber?

Also, this rifle has beautiful wood, but you can't really see it unless it's in direct sunlight. Any tips to lighten up the color so you can actually see the grain?

Wrap 400 grit silicon carbide paper tightly around a dowel, and then polish longitudinally (pull the paper in and out, rather than twisting the dowel).  I've found that works better to clean up a sticking chamber than polishing radially.  You can adjust how much you wrap around the dowel to cut primarily at and behind the rings you observe.

If it were mine I'd leave it alone. Nice rifle. Love the wood.

He wants to polish the chamber, not the stocks.

Beautiful wood. Lay it in the sun often so people can enjoy it.

Try this stuff.    (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

You already have one positive recommendation for it.

I need to order some SPG anyway, I'll throw some of that in, thanks!

I also asked this question in the BPCR Facebook group and the main suggestion for the chamber seems to be the maroon Scotch Brite pads wrapped on an undersized brush. Connect to a drill and run it slow in and out 4-5 times. Sound like a decent plan?

The Scotch Brite pads won't hurt your chamber and work well for cleaning up engraving. They aren't aggressive enough to polish a scared chamber.
The advice given by ssdave above is the best method but don't get carried away and over do the polishing.

I used a fired case that had a threaded rod on the end of it.  Applied some 400 grit lapping compound to the case.  I used a fired case to ensure that I would not get in to the throat.

Cheers,
Steve

I used 600 wet dry grit. Screwed A shaft on the 32-40 case and lightly went in chamber to polish out,wet the paper. used on  hand drill. Polished some, took a shot  ,cleaned chamber and checked the chamber out. Then 1500 to polish out, worked great, just went slowwwww
