Understanding scopes and scope blocks (Read 609 times)

	Never having owned a scoped rifle, I know little to nothing about scopes and blocks. With my aging eyes I'm looking at getting a scoped or scope ready rifle. I cam across a very nice CPA with these blocks. What type are they and what rings/mounts work with them? Since I know nothing about scopes, what traditional style scope would you recommend for informal bench shooting out to 200 yards max? Magnification, brand, mounts etc. Thanks, Steve

	Those are universal blocks for set up for either posa mount or a standard amount. Right now they’re set up for a posa mount. The posa mount is on the right in the picture. The standard amount is on the left in the picture. to change just turned the bases around.

	Seller should be able to tell you the spacing. I'd like to say that it doesn't look odd, but just be sure what it is. Scott

	Steve, for bench work, magnification of between 15 and 24 power, and Unertl, Lyman, Fecker, Litschert or Davis all made good traditional scopes. Regards, Joe

	Thanks for your insight guys. Another question - I see MVA, maybe others have dovetail scope blocks. If I were to buy an original rifle with no scope mounts, I would not want to drill and tap it. Would these dovetail mounts work well front and back on say a 30" barrel? Thanks.

Dovetail mounts only work if you buy a full length scope long enough to use typical front and rear dovetails. For a 30" barrel that usually take a 34"-36" scope depending on eye relief.

	Get a copy of Randy Wright's book, Loading & Shooting the Traditional American Schuetzen Rifle. Many of the usual suspects list it: Track of the Wolf, Buffalo Arms, or Randy himself often has it listed in our For Sale section. It will answer many of the questions you are asking, without being too basic for experienced shooters or too advanced for beginners. I go back to my copy when I find myself in need of expert advice...which is frequently as I get older!
