ok so I just picked up the UGLY DUCKLING Ballard No.9 Union Hill.
it has 32/40 stamped in top of the barrel, the barrel, receiver and its finely carved stock all match serial numbers. so as i tear her down to give a complete inspection, I discover the breech block halves do not match . Also to add insult to injury and to sprinkle a bit of confusion, the extractor is stamped 38/55! When I first brought it home I test loaded a 32/40, it fit perfect, and the extractor kicked the case out like it should. sooooo, do i have a hodge podge bunch of junk or?? i will load pictures later.
