Has anyone worked with this powder in a small bore ctg.?  I am working with a .25 Stevens centefire in a forged Ballard action.  The recommended powders..Red Dot and W231 at 1.8gr. to 1.9gr. give around 3/4" to 7/8" groups at 50yds. with Lyman tang & tiny ivory bead front.  Last weeked I tried Vihtavouri 3N37...not knowing anything about this powder except I read it was used for loading .22 long rifle rimfire, I strarted way low...first loads sounded like .22 short.  Working up 1 grain at a time, 2.6 gr. looked promising at 3/4".  My last and heavest load was 2.8gr.  I got a 3/8" group!   I didn't think my old eyes still had it!  But I am concerned about pressure in this old Ballard.  Action lever snaps up tight with quite a bit of resistance on empty chamber..and I would like to keep it this way.  cases fired with the 2.8gr. load fall right out of chamber and primers look the same as with the 1.9gr. Red Dot loads.  The Red Dot & W231 loads seem to want more velocity..but with these fast powders. I am afraid of a pressure spike.  Vihtavouri 3N37 is # 32 on Lyman burn rate chart, whereas Red Dot is #6.  I have always read where a slower powder give less pressure and greater velocity.  Firing the 2.8gr. Viht. load is louder than the Red Dot-W231, and recoil seems just a bit more pronounced.  Any thoughts and or suggestions welcome.  Oh, bullets are cast from an old Ideal Perfection adjustable, set at 66.8 grs. 25-1 lead-tin, lube my own home brew..B.W., Castor oil, Anhyd. lanolin, & Carnauba wax.  No leading in 60 shots.

I won't worry to much about it. I have a early, flat side, cast frame, in 2520ss and have shot at least 200 rounds of WC820 (Surplus #9), with a 73 gr custom cast bullet, at 1700+ fps and it hasn't complained a bit, in anyway.

A mild load in a Forged frame Ballard, in 32/40 would be 17200 PSI, chamber pressure, in back thrust, that would equal, 30,000 in a 2520ss.

As far as radial pressure goes, the large shank of the Ballard will take much more that those figures, before anything can effect the frame.
