	Need a recommendation for an accurate 6" electronic caliper. Hopefully for less than $100. Thanks in advance. Have decided I want an all-steel electronic caliper. Does anyone have such?

	I bought an earlier version of this one in 2014 and have been very happy with it. (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links) Of course real machinists (I'm not one. I'm still banging rocks together.) don't use such things, or so I've been told.

	I'm not a complete idiot, some of my parts are missing.

	get it close with calipers then use a good mic. I see pople use calipers all the time and never use a mic I cant do that. I have a lot of calipers dial, electronic, vinier, I use them all cheap To real good ones the Harbor frt ones work just fine. plus with H F there real cheap you can get 2 or 3 pairs. Ken

	I bought an inexpensive electronic dial caliper and used it for awhile comparing it to my Starrett dial caliper. I found enough error in it to make me return it. Since then I've used the dial caliper, and for really precise work a micrometer.

	Greetings, Watch eBay for a new set of Mitutoyo. #500-196-20 There are many Communist Chinese counterfeits of this caliper. Do a quick Google search to learn how to tell if Genuine or Fake. The batteries have long life, even if you forget to turn them off. Once Zero is set, you rarely have to adjust it. Cheers, Dave

	It all boils down to getting the best you can afford (and then some) no matter which system you buy into. Personally I'm an analog kind of guy when it comes to metrological devices. Cold hard steel makes me more comfy than electronics do. Like most I also eschew dial verniers for anything but rough quick measurements to get me close and then I switch to mics (or a lovely vernier caliper, but that one sees less usage as my eyes age out).

	I keep a 1" gauge block to check accuracy occasionally with both calipers and mikes.

	I don't like digital because, no matter how long the battery lasts, when I go to use them, it's dead. Dial calipers never go dead.

	A good friend owned a world class machine shop and did a lot of NASA work. he referred to these as WELDING CLAMPS.

	Condorsc I picked up an old Starrett dial caliper and love it. I do use a mic if I need it. I prefer old school car guages as well. Just personal preference Jack

	No matter how careful most machinists are calipers get knocked around a bit. These tools use one circuit board ( the box ) that is integral and travels on the jaw slide. I’m pretty sure all of the circuit/slide units are Chinese made. All of the internal circuit components are soldered and therefore susceptible to embrittlement and shock failure. Higher quality solder and better design will yield longer service life. So unlike the old dial mechanical calipers the life of lower cost electronic units can be expected to be shorter. As a rule of thumb you get what you pay for. Rick

	I have a few good mics and calipers, but I'd agree with one of the earlier comments about the HF. Probably got a lucky pair of them, but I've checked them often enough, and still do, that I don't hesitate to use them.

I second Craigd's comments And add this, there is no such thing as an accurate caliper. Having spent more then 40 years using them as a toolmaker and an engineer, we always referred to them as "Verynears"
