Ballard dual ignition percussion nipple size
Sep 3rd, 2024 at 8:27pm
Print Post
I recently brought a very nice condition Ball & Williams Ballard 44 RF Sporting Rifle with the Merwin & Bray 1864 Patent dual ignition breech block.

The percussion nipple is missing from the block.
But the threads look to be in reasonable condition so I would like to fit a correct nipple if I can find one

Can anyone please tell me the specifications for this nipple and perhaps cross reference it to the Track of The Wolf offerings ?

The rifle is in extremely good condition.
Serial number places it in 1865
Bore is 9/10
I have made one reloadable RF case ( from 7x57R ) and fired it very successfully
Awaiting some 44 Special cases to arrive and I will make some more reloadable cases and take it hunting.

I can't help with the cone threads. But I have a .44 rimfire Ball & Williams Ballard that I shoot. I'm glad to see another one back in action.  You may have seen my youtube video about shooting mine.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I also have videos on making reloadable rimfire cases.

I shoot 25 Rimfire, 32 Rimfire and 44 Rimfire now

All pretty easy when you have a bit of knowledge.

I just want to complete the Ballard with the correct percussion nipple because the rifle is in such good condition.
The dual ignition is a great feature and it would be nice to show people because its so different

I would give S&S firearms a try. They often have parts for these old Ballards and many others.

Yeah I tried S&S and they didn't know the size or have anything obviously suitable.

Next time I have the breech block out to clean after I've shot it I will disassemble the halves and measure the treads.
Should be able to measure the maximum length as well.

I just thought someone on here might have known the specs for it.
Funny these things are all written about in books etc.
But no one drills into the detail and what cap size

Dissassemble the halfs? Mine is a one piece block.

I have a Merrimack Ballard with the same dual ignition system. An  original 1860 Colt navy pistol nipple worked in mine…I compared it to the origonal nipple and it was an exact match…

The one piece block was not dual ignition

Well that makes sense to use a small readily available nipple from the same period
I will look on line at the specs for the Colt 1860 nipple and measure the threads in mine
