32-40 vs 30-30

In have SS rifles in both.  Still working on getting the best accuracy out of them.
All I shoot is smokeless.  Any reason one would be considered better than the other?
At the moment, I have been casting everything from 20:1 alloy.  My velocity readings are 1400 fps+.  I’m thinking a harder alloy might be a smart move?
The 30/32 rifles are used for OH (Schuetzen) style competition.
The 30-30 has a 1:10 twist; the 32-40 is 1:12.
Mike.

Breech seated or fixed? 20-1 is great breech seating.
What actions are they on?

My opinion not supported by anything except my personal lead bullet competition experience fixed bullets with both calibers & breech seating 32/40.

30/30 preforms best with gas checked lead loaded fixed bullets at about 1650 FPS  32/40 plain base 1450 is the sweet spot either fixed or breech . Match rules on bullets gas checked or not breech allowed or not allowed generally set what most  shooters use. Breech seating were its allowed 32/40 by far the better cartridge.

Another factor few here will agree with, fixed cartridges will produce higher scores in most offhand matches. Once the rifle performs adequately, scoring offhand is mostly the shooters skill. Advantage slightly better accuracy breech setting more than offset by advantages shooter focusing on his shot not loading cartridges. Others may have different opinions

Absolutely agree with BOATS -- at one time, I was also a serious OH shooter, occasionally posting a target in the 230’s.   But it took some training to stay up there, and finally gave up working at it about 20 years ago.

I just shoot fixed.
The 30-30 is a CPA (Schuetzen style); the 32-40 is a Cody Ballard High Wall (Helm configuration).

I don’t shoot offhand as well as I used to. 77 this weekend eyesight holding me back iron sight matches. But my soon to be 17 year Grandson has taken to offhand with one of my CPA rifles. Started him about 10 with air rifles then .22’s.

COVID shut down the schools when he was about 13, he was miserable with poor on line teaching. Glitches connections etc. Arranged for skeet shooting lessons club on the nearby Navy Air station every Monday. Did well with it, then we switched to Sporting clays, more fun. Never pushed offhand single shots. This summer he asked if he could go to my regular shooting buddies Tuesday Ram Bash practice sessions.

Took to it well, the guys coached him by example. Kept him away from serious competition so far.  He’s about ready to enter one of the monthly matches. Thing with offhand you have to want it. Takes time to work out position focus strategy etc. Kids have good eyes and reflexes.

I hope he catches the bug Boats! You will be a proud gramps.

I wish either of my sons would have shown interest in my style of shooting. They love black plastic and bursts of lead.
