When shooting with a scoped rifle do you wear prescription lenses (close or distance) or clear safety glasses?

a friend, and my trusted eye doctor, who is also a hunter, told me, when I asked this very question upon his writing my first prescription, was either way works if the scope is adjusted to that view. My solution was to focus for the regular eyewear. Iron sights may have differing solutions.

I am far sighted. So, up close I need some "reading" level
eye correction.  SO
I use quality bifocal safety glasses, yellow lenses
and  2.0 diopter bifocal which enables me to see my scope adjustment knobs up close for making corrections.$
They are only about $18 on line/ebay.

I need +3 reading glasses for most everything and add a second pair over the top for reading (like right now) or a headband magnifier  in the shop.  I can shoot fine with the readers but buy a full frame +3 safety reader.   I can only find them online.  It is a head scratcher that local hardware stores only sell bifocal safety glasses and not the full frame ones.  I am sure a large percentage of their customer base would use them.  The only issue is that some that have good eye coverage also fog up.  I drilled some vent holes in one pair to address that issue.

Jeff   Your remark, although sage advice, did not answer Ray H's question.

I'm one of the "lucky" young guys (38) that has been wearing glasses since 3rd grade. I have always shot with my prescription glasses on. Although at the last shoot while setting up the rifle with a new stock, I did not have the scope far enough forward and did manage to put a good scrape in the top corner of the lens

I've always worn my prescription eye glasses while shooting a rifle with a scope. I'm horribly near sighted and now wear progressive lenses.

Since you should always wear glasses when shooting, I have shooting glasses made just for that. I had my cataracts removed so my vision has cleared up. My distance lens is only -.5 but I had the bifocal made so I can see my sight or scope adjustments without having to back up a lot to see them.

My research concludes that prescription glasses with lenses of polycarbonate material are usually acceptable; however, "safety rated" (per ANSI) polycarbonate is preferred.
Also, the scope must be adjusted to "fine tune" the optical picture to the specific prescription of the eyeglasses.
Near sighted shooters will likely benefit from corrective lenses to better see the target.
Obviously, eye protection makes good sense.

I use a slight prescription, -.5, to clear things up with the 22 BPCR rifle with the scope on.  My wife and I shoot the same rifle at matches and this keeps us from having to adjust the focus.  It also adds a layer of protection to my eyeball.  She generally wears clear safety glasses.

If you are like me and besides the near and far sighted problem I also have astigmatism and must wear prescription glasses using scope or iron sights.

Is anyone familiar with Decot Hy-Wyd Sport glasses? They offer a myriad of lens options. Prescription or not, several sizes, and many colors. (website: decot.com) Comments appreciated. Thanks.

A word of warning to anyone getting cataracts done. They of course break it into two operations. A year or so later they will do the other eye. Discuss your requirements from the new lenses and make damn sure you and your surgeon are on the same page. I had mine done at VA. The first went just fine. The second was done by a different surgeon, who inserted a lens of a different focal length. She claimed, without ANY discussion, that people want different focal lengths. It was a disaster. Double vision, etc. Embarrassed They tried or discussed every corrective approach they could think of, from inserting a second, "piggy back" lens to contacts. You need to discuss it with your surgeon and make sure you're both in agreement. It would be great if you could get the same surgeon the second time.

Work requires me to wear safety glasses so i have all my prescription glasses made with ANSI lenses. I use them for shooting as well. No issues with scope or irons. progressive lenses make it easy to see adjustments.

The VA may break up the cataract surgery that much but mine were 1 week apart. That was fine with me as I had my non-shooting eye first and that was such a breeze that I had no qualms about the second one. You will be naturally nervous about the doctor cutting a hole in your eye and vacuuming out the old lens and slipping in the new one while you are watching. Took about 6 minutes or less and I never felt a thing. I took the left lens out of my prescription glasses and was good the go the next day. You just have to follow the doctor's regiment and apply the drops for a couple of days.

Basically the same as Oneatatime. No problems whatsoever, one week apart and the surgery was a breeze, about 12 years ago. The Optometrist put in progressive lens and haven’t had to wear glasses at all since then.

I have been shooting with perscription Ray-Ban shooting glasses for years.  Started out with glass lens..now have switched to the stronger plastic. I have a scratch resistant coating,,but you still have to be careful what you clean them with.  These are the yellow tint.  Last couple of years, I had them put in bi-focal lens,,was always switching with regular glasses to adjust vernier tang sights..had them fit bi-focal low on lens, as on my regular glasses.

I'm tacking this onto Hypo's to get it seen. I manufactured and sold anti-fogging lens cleaner many years ago. When glass fogs, it's called adsorption- the moisture continues to pile up on the glass, but in adsorption it's spread out on the surface, eliminating fogging. Any soap-based detergent will reduce or eliminate fogging. Applying it with a Q- tip is a good start. If you want to experiment with mixing it to make it last longer on the lens, Neutrogena soap is a good start. Keep in mind it's eventually going to reduce to a hard nubbin.

I've been trying to answer that question for a year or more.  Tried progressives.  Got a kinked neck trying to find the sweet spot so's I could see thru the scope.  Now I'm using yellow safety glasses, distance Rx.  Works as good as my old eyes can see.

Many years ago I had shooting glasses made but found your eye needs a few days to properly adjust to changing your glasses so converting to alternate glasses would not solve my problem unless I wore them for days so my eyes balanced to them.

Progressive lens like most eye glasses losses their clarity and increases distortion near the edge of the glasses which you are looking through when shooting through a scope.

The clarity and distortion of the edge of the lens were compensated with Essilor Varilux progressive lens technology which helped my vision when shooting with a scope and irons as well.
