All nice set-ups. Westerner, I really like your vee-pin setup. Ill have to try and remember that for angular flexibility.

Attached are photos of a handy accessory that I use often enough to keep on the milling machine table.
It swivels to match the taper, so no shims are needed. It holds tapered barrels and stocks securely.

No, not a problem but much easier and faster with one of these. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) Got mine at a gun show many years ago for a hundred bucks.

Best thing since peanut butter.

Brownells has them cheaper than buying direct from Forster

Barrel is in 30-30 going on a High Wall.  I had a conversation with a fellow who had a "Smith" drill and tap for Scope Blocks.  First time they were crooked, second time they leaned the other way.  Got to thinking if someone clamps a Tapered Barrel in a Vice, "Seems a little loose, I'll just tighten it up" and doesn't check for center at each place after 7 1/4" the Blocks will lean.
My other post about cutting bases to fit the diameter was another attempt to keep it straight.  David

David, Appreciate the thread and the post.
Have trouble finding straight up on a round barrel.
Tried squaring off the receiver and center. Good suggestions in this thread.

We machine round & octagon barrels in large V blocks, two Kurt vises mounted to the table and aligned, matching V block in each vise, holds well and hard to get off center.

For new round barrels, threaded barrel is screwed into frame and frame is squared up in the mill, either mount a small v block on the barrel squared up to the mill table or make your first sight dovetail cut. All other squaring operations are made off the v block or dovetail cut.
