This is the best I've come up with.  And it lets me play with one of my favorite tools..Gage Pins!   Nothing special about what size to use.  Just so they're half the difference between the Taper at two points.  I know, what is he talking about 🤷🏻‍♂️.  David

I too, enjoy odd/effective setups on both the lathe and mill. If you are trying to make $$ on sight mounting, get yourself a fully loaded Forster sight fixture and you will wonder how you did without it.

I do like your set up with the pins, I see you also put some kind of shim between the pins and the barrel. Very good idea, My fear with the pins right against the barrel would be that it might cause a depression depending on how hard you lean on the vice handle. A thin hardened parallel on each side of the barrel would work wonders to prevent any damage and a dab of super glue to hold the parallel to the barrel would possibly be a good idea as well. If nothing else it would keep things from shifting around when trying to tighten things up.

That is how I've always done too but I like the idea of V blocks. Not sure how Deadeye Bly does it so I went out in the shop and stuck some stuff together. I like the rigidity.

One block has to be shimmed so both blocks have equal pressure on the barrel. Not sure how DB does it. The pin idea works but V blocks are simpler and easier to deal with. 

Frank, I use the same setup for profiling. For cutting dovetails I like using a vise. For drilling and tapping I use a Forster jig.
