While waiting on a chamber reamer I have been practicing making side plates while contemplating on what to make my side plates from. I found a picture of one with horn I think. Anyone know of a source for this material and are there different colors other than black?

Contact Joe Dobrzynski, he’s the only one I know that handles horn.  Although I’m not sure he would have anything as large as what you need.  Nothing but black that I’ve seen.  Seems I’ve seen somewhere there an artificial ivory, but don’t know a thing about it.

There's always fossil mammoth ivory or a longitudinal slab from the base of an elk antler.

If you want simulated ivory this is a good option from the link below.  The ivory acrylic she has is a great material also that can be scrimshawed.

The original  panels back in the day where made out of wood on the early guns and later of dark brown / black Celluloid.

A few original rifle are know with silver and gold panels
but never from horn.

Lynn,
FWIW, JoDo on ebay is Joe Dobrzynski.  You can buy it direct from him by contacting him here on the forum.

Scrap pieces of walnut and ebony are a very cost effective material, that looks nice as well.

I second the ebony. Hard wood but sands very easily. Nice contrast
To the walnut stock.

Paper micarta in sheets has a bit of a "grain" to it and can be had in pure white and ivory colors.

I did mine with steel, nitre blued and engraved in the style of the Ballard long range engraving.  I like it.

If I were doing panels on a Borchardt I'd use spalted Madrone. Because I like it.

That is some beautiful wood. Where can I find some and how does it machine out? Problem I have is the four radius corners. I get three of them but always blow out a fourth one. Been practicing but these things are hard to do. I rough them out with a jewelers saw them finish them on a belt sander. Guess I need more practice...

Very hard dense wood. Those pieces came from a stump taken off a beach on the Hood Canal in Warshington about 25 years ago.

The last of that wood went to a knifemaker named Stubblefield, North of Leavenworth WA.
