Smokeless powder for 38-50 Rem-Hep

What powders are recommended for shooting the 38-50?  I would like to hunt whitetails with a jacketed bullet in my rifle and I would like to know what powders work in large volume black powder cartridges?

Are either readily available today?  Forgive my ignorance please, I don’t think I have loaded in quite some time….
Thanks,

You'll just have to see what's out there in your local area.

The big suppliers on the internet seem to be out.  I will keep an eye out for Accurate 5744 when I am out and about.
I do have IMR 4198 and Accurate 2015 which both seem to be recommended for 45-70.  I will have to search my loading tables for these two powders.

I suggest you look at smokeless 38-55 and 375Win loads in the handbooks, LYman #50 . You can work up in your (Modern, I hope) rifle with the 38-50 which has about 10% greater case capacity over the 38-55 .
I found an excellent deer hunt load for my Marlin 336CB 38-55 with Reloader 7.   Similar in burn rate to old IMR 3031which was and is a go-to for relatively straight wall cases.

I had also used
the 3031 for full loads in my '86 Win 45-70. Then graduated to 4895 or Varget when I ran out of 3031

Thanks beltfed, I will check out those resources.  My IMR 3031 is my lightest container, indicating how popular it was 25 years ago in my reloading room.

WV, at the velocities involved the deer will never know whether the bullet had a jacket or not.

Well…….  The way I learned to reload ammo, oneatatime, one uses jacketed bullets with white powder and greased grooved bullets with black powder…. I guess I was not brought up right??

If you were brought up in West Virginia I'm sure you were brought up right! I suppose Ken Waters wasn't though as every load on that page was white powder and lead bullets - OK, 3 of them had gas checks and 1 was a half jacket;-) I was just making a comment on the deer's reaction to being shot. Let's go at it a different way: what rifle do you have? What bullet were you thinking of using? What is the groove diameter of your barrel?

i have been using 4198 and a cast bullet of 285 gr. in my rolling block. The charge weight is 23 gr. I would call it mostly a target load as if i remember correctly the velocity was fairly slow. Tomorrow i will check my records and see if i ran it over the chronograph. The one thing i can say it is accurate most loads going 1.5 inches with some right at an inch at 100 yards.  Ken Waters lists 23 gr of 4198 in the 38-55 at 1450 fps with a 250 gr. bullet. that should be close to the 38/50 and if it does 1450 or so it should drop anything you hit with it. Waters lists 3 categories of rifles and this load is for his weakest action rifles. Hope this helps

if you think you have it figured out  then you just dont understand

You know I am going to build me one of those if I can ever find a chamber reamer. Those things are like hens teeth. Tried two grind houses and both have unbelievable lead times. I am taking notes here so if I ever do get it done I will have some load info.
