Yes, Roger "Oly" Olson.

He lived in Gold Hill, OR and was one of the original members of my Jefferson State Schuetzen Society club, that shot at Josephine County Sportsman Park, near Grants Pass, OR.

He was a great guy and very generous with his time. He sold me a Slug Gun and got me in to that for a while. He was one of the premiere Slug Gun shooters on the West Coast and overall, I would say he won about 50% or more of the matches. Slug guns were fairly popular in the '80's and before and Ken Breisen did most of the barrels.

Oly was a really great guy and very sadly missed.

RIP

I used to shoot with Milo B. Taylor, and it's likely that it was one of his many rifles that he sold to Ole Olson in Grants Pass. Milo made molds and swedges for two-piece paper-patch bullets, and although Milo's stuff was a bit crude, it worked really well.

Frank, do you have pictures of the range near Grants Pass?

I shot with those guys once about 1996-7. It was an interesting range cut into the side of a hill. I got to meet Oly and for sure he was a real gentleman. If you have pictures will you please post them.

Joe,
I looked threw all my gun related pictures but, don't have any of the range.

Bob is a picture guy, maybe he took some when he came up to shoot.

The range sits between two berms. On the left side the berm is about 20 ft tall and ends at 100 yards, into trees, for the last 100. On the right, it at least twice that tall, above that, is the high power range. The bench area is about 50 ft wide and the 200 yard range goes up hill about 20 - 30 ft.

I hope that helps.

Some Slug Gun results:

BTW, I'm the only one still alive in those match results.

Snatched this from online. Teri and I were there about 1989. We drove her little Honda station wagon that had a bazillion miles. Swore we would never do that again, and we didn't.

Yes,, that's it on the left, the high power range on the right.

The white looking line is the 100 yard line.

This is also the range that Jim Feren set the still standing, 100 shot, Hudson OH record, in 1993.

I guess ASSRA is waiting until Feren holds the record longer than Hudson did, to add his name to the match.

Is the Iwanaga mentioned in those results Paul Iwanaga by chance, better known by his rendezvous nickname of “Who?”

If so, he is still alive and well, at least as of a few months ago. Spent a weekend with him and quite a few other folks at Warren Adair’s and Ron Scott’s annual gunmakers seminar in Corvallis.

I have all the molds and tools that came with the rifle. Molds swage and all sorts of stuff that I have not figured out what they are. The base mold is adjustable for length.
When I acquired the rifle from Don Moore he told me that it is a slug gun and not a picket rifle because it was finally discovered to be a gain twist ending faster than 24 inches.

What a very neat rifle, and provenance! And having the shooting kit also with tools makes it over the top!

That literally is a gun built around a barrel... Love the history and the old range pictures. Unique range for sure.
