32-40 Rem Hepburn (Read 1261 times)

	Can anyone suggest a bullet to try in my 32-40 Hepburn? I have shot some 150 grain and my recently purchased Accurate mold 180 gr which I am very disappointed in. The rifle has a BRC 1 in 10 twist barrel that I know is capable of good accuracy. There was a RCBS bullet now discontinued that I have heard of. Any help would be welcome. I really enjoy shooting this rifle just need to find a good bullet. JMH

	If it were me, I would try the MOS 208gr mould that CPA sells. Jack

	The Hepburn is a 30 cal. I think the Mos mold is 32... JMH

	Remington was a confused as I am. What part of .309 is 32? From Cheaper Than Dirt reference data: Bullet Diameter .309; Overall Loaded Length 3.25; Can be made from 303 British; Rimmed Straight; Also called 32-40 Remington But here is their description of 32 Remington: Bullet Diameter .320; Overall Loaded Length 2.57; Can be made from 30-30 Winchester; Rimless Bottleneck; Created by Remington, 1906 You learn something new but something old then gets flushed out of the cerebral archives. I may never know what I lost

JMH 32-40 Hepburn is supposed to be 30 caliber. Are you loading fixed ammo or breech seating for target/accurate shooting?

	I am loading fixed. Never done breech seating but have always wanted to try it. For now and to just be able to shoot it some was trying to get a fixed load going. JMH

	The only fixed lead bullet ammo I ever had luck with was a 25-20 Single Shot. I used hard bullets cast half wheel weights and half linotype. Will shoot roughly two inch groups at 200 yards. Bullets are about .001 over groove diameter and are not tapered.

	jhm I have had good accuracy with my Brg BPCR/8 twist lilja, chambered in 32-40 Rem. As said, brass is RP 303British formed in CH die, fire formed , then outside neck turned. Note, my chamber is a Dan T tight neck match chamber. I have the reamer, too. I use WLR primers/ 15.5 gr 4227/0.060 LDPE wad pushed down with Lyman 311299 cast of 9+1 COWW/Lino/ MTL lube sized to O.308 What with the 8 twist, I have several Long 30 cal molds up to 247 grains I need to get around to working out loads with.

	Remington offered the Hepburn in two .32-40 chambers. The .32-40 Hepburn, and the .32-40 B&M, which is the .32-40 most of us know well. I have a .32-40 B&M Hepburn Match B and it's almost a .33 caliber, and wont accept any fixed cartridges with the large groove diameter. I shoot a .328" 195 grain bullet from a Saeco-Darr mold that has a large base band to seal it when breech seated. The 195 shoots extremely well.

	As close as I can measure .310 . I was mistaken on the bullet of interest. It was not a RCBS but the Lyman 311299 that was mentioned. Have been looking for that mold but I think it is discontinued. Also I was shooting 1 in 20 mixture of lead. JMH

	A 180-200 grain works well in the 30 cal 1-10 twist

	Checked my three NOS Lyman-Ideal .30 caliber molds, but none are really heavy. One a plinker 115 gr., one a 165 gr., and the last a 187 gr. Only the 115 gr. is .311" as the other two will likely cast a .309" bullet.
