Stevens Receiver Marking

I had this on the another thread, but little response.
This is the receiver face of a Stevens 414 Armory Rifle.
It is marked with a large "S" instead of a model number.
Any guess what it may mean?
Thanks,
Mike.

I don't know what the "S" stamping means.  The late production rifles had the model number stamped on the lower tang. Does this 414 have the model number stamped on the lower tang?
