32-20 CPA

Hello all,

I’m laying in supplies for a 32-20 CPA before it’s completed

Ballard #2 cast action
CPA is currently fitting a Douglas 15 twist barrel setup for breech seating.
They recommend the Mos mould
.322" tapered to .314"
1.16" long
205 grains
I’ve read all I could find on the past forum posts for this caliber and it seems 4227 and 4100 are the powders most commonly mentioned
Does anyone have any advice on powder choice and/or optimal velocity for 100 & 200 yard shooting?
I recently made a mistake with unique powder breech seating 38-55 which I was gratuitously helped in a recent post.
I don’t want to head down the wrong path with this caliber in the cast Ballard action. I’m learning to ask questions before I start.

Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you
Jason

205 gr, is a lot to push, in a Ballard action.

32/20's are weak cases and I'm afraid you might stretch the case heads. Rem cases are best but, still can stretch, if the action isn't at least as strong as a 44 1/2.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Way too heavy a bullet for the .32-20 in a Ballard, and really too much for a lot of actions in a .32-20 cartridge!
I'd have the mold made for something much lighter about 130 or 140 gr. I'm frankly a bit surprised that CPA would even recommend that extremely heavy bullet mold! That would be fine for a .32-40 and would even be considered a bit heavier than factory rounds for the .32-40!

Just to add to the weight debate, my heaviest bullet for 32-40 In my high walls is a nominal 200 grain from an old Ideal mould.  Normally I stick to 185-200 grain bullets for all of my 32s, including 32/357 Dell in a Peregrine action.

The 32-20 CPA cartridge was developed for the CPA copy of the 44 1/2 Stevens which, being made of modern steels, is arguably one of the strongest single shot actions out there.  OTOH, the cast action Ballard, for all of its good points, is one of the weakest single shot actions commonly found in the schuetzen game.  Friend Vall (marlinguy) is arguably among the greatest lovers of Ballards in the world, but he wouldn't argue this point.  Most of us would hesitate to chamber a cast Ballard in the old 32-40, and 32-20 (original) shouldn't be hot rodded too much.

Your money and your safety decision, but I would advise against putting that kind of stress on your cast Ballard action.

Thank you,

I’m not sure what direction to head now though.
I felt confident in the recommendation of caliber and Bullet mould but it certainly seems I need to regroup

They have started fitting the barrel so I am stuck with the caliber.

It appears a custom mould is in order.
