Acetone on Blueing

For these older guns, i.e. pre-WW1, is acetone safe for the blueing?

Most reports are that acetone is safe for modern blueing on steel (not alum), but when I de-greasing a patch on my Hopkins Allen / Rev-o-Noc, it seemed like it was thinning the blue.

Acetone will remove the oils.  On some old guns the patina you see is dried on oils, and not bluing or browning.  Acetone takes that stuff off, and sometimes you get left with bare metal.

Mark Novak has a decent video that gives an overview of the steps to stop the decay on old guns.  Worth watching in my opinion.

I bought a Ballard Pacific that two sons had coated all the metal with varnish 60 years ago to protect their father's rifle. Nothing would touch that varnish except acetone. So I removed the wood and began the long task of soaking small areas and quickly wiping the varnish off before the acetone dried and the varnish hardened again. Took me 8 hrs., but the acetone had no effect on the 140 year old rust bluing, or the case colors.

I’ve used it on a lot of old Ballards, Marlin levers and other late 1800s to early 1900s old guns. Even occasionally on old stocks that are oil soaked.

not to stray far but years ago I read about using easy-off oven cleaner to pull grease and oil out of old military rifle stocks. I have used the technique often, takes more than one application most times. Seems like this was written up in one of the old NRA gunsmithing books.

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

Yes, I’ve used easy off oven cleaner on a couple really oil soaked stocks. Took several applications and finished with an acetone application.

What thread drift!  So, is acetone a threat to old blueing, or not?

I thought my pictures showed it didn't hurt the bluing on my 140 year old Ballard?

No it is not.  If you are removing patina from the old rifle, it is probably dried oil/grease that is coming off.

Thank you for the replies.  I didn't think acetone was a threat to blueing, but the internet search produced conflicting answers.  What I saw must have been the removal of oil and patina.

The internet is a nice thing, but often someone who answers a question is simply passing along a myth they heard vs. actually having hands on experience to know their answer is correct.

Marlinguy,
So true.  People can't stop talking.  They pass on "what they heard" just to talk, instead of letting the people with hands-on experience voice their knowledge.
