Mr Taylor,

I think he had a fixture that he made to hold the 74 receiver for his lathe. Can't really say cause I never thought to ask him how he did it. He just said he would not do another. Does anyone know if John King is still taking work or has he retired?

One of the things I learned many years ago for internal threads on blind holes is to run the lathe in reverse. Basically starting at the bottom of the hole and cutting the threads on the way out. This way you are not worried about stopping the lathe, just starting. Set up the boring bar with the proper cutting bit like you plan on cutting external threads with it and cut the thread from the opposite side of the hole.

Threading away from the head stock works well if your chuck is not a screw on type. Or am I not understanding?

You are correct, I learned the hard way when I messed up a job many years ago. While I don't have that worry anymore, if it is a concern a set screw can be added to a chuck to keep it from unscrewing.
