Stevens 1915 Favorite ejector - reassembly trick?

I've fought these things for years - always end up tossing it and substituting a normal extractor, or grinding the plunger off in a fury.

But....there MUST be a way to get the breechblock screw back in without resorting to magic.  What is it?

Phil, I use a screwdriver placed down through the top of the action to depress the ejector plunger so that you can get the breech block screw threads started. You'll need to pry against the top of the receiver.  It's still tricky and requires three hands, but it has worked for me.

Been trying that.....now I need to try harder.   Yeah, three hands at least.   Next I'll try holding the thing in a vise.

Thanks!

Using the vise did it!

Gotta tell the story of this one.  A month or two ago I bought a .25 RF barrel from Dave Becker that he said was mint inside, and it is.  So needed an action for it; bought what I thought was a Model 19 "parts gun" on GB, cheap.  Picked it up from my FFL on Tuesday, and dammee if it's barrel isn't 98% inside as well.  Needed work on the firing pin or I never would have taken it apart.  So now I need ANOTHER action for Dave's barrel.  I think I'm past owning a dozen .25s now.  Roll Eyes

Use a 5/32" punch and insert the punch from the right side of the receiver.
Use the tip of the punch to depress the plunger in the ejector
Then insert the pivot screw from the left side just past the tip of the plunger
At that point remove the punch and slowly screw the pivot screw past the tip of the plunger and seat it fully in the receiver
