F/S 38-55 Peterson Ballard (Final Price drop)

Print Post
I am selling a Peterson Ballard Rifle. It is a 38-55 Caliber. This rifle has the original false muzzle. It has a very crisp and extremely light set trigger. The bore is in great shape. The barrel is extremely heavy. It measures 30" long without the false muzzle and 1.244 at the muzzle and 1.333 at the chamber end. It has a 1:16 twist. The rifle shoots very well. I have shot multiple match group targets in the 3/16" range at 100yds. I am focusing on rimfire shooting more these days, so it is time to thin the herd. I am selling the rifle for $2,800 plus shipping. Please message with any questions.

Beautiful, I take it that stud protruding from the left side of the receiver is for a breech seater?

It is a threaded stud for a seating tool.

It appears to possibly be a takedown pin as well?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Both Peterson and Schoyen used those studs for both purposes, and also to make up two barrel sets. Sometimes if one barrel was a .22RF the stud wasn't used to breech seat, or if it was a false muzzle barrel it was just to secure the takedown system.
OP's rifle is a pretty neat custom Ballard!

Yes marlinguy, I have observed  quite a number set up both ways, both as anchor for breech seater and takedown pin, or as one or the other. Difficult to tell for positive with the photographs provided, but appears to be a takedown pin more loosely fit via a slight gap. Somewhat irrelevant, as it is a really nifty Peterson example in very good condition. You might include it in your collection!

I would assume with a false muzzle barrel it wont be used as a stud to breech seat it.

I was told mine was for a switch barrel system that ended up being made as a breech seat stud later in its life.

You are most likely correct marlinguy, another reason to make that assumption. The all too common problem being, as cbashooter points out, in many cases more than 100 years have passed and it is anybody's guess who did what when. Peterson lived to be a very old man, and the time frame for the more common use of muzzle loading had dimmed, so quite possibly some owner decided to shoot breech loading and bench shooting in particular considering the apparent weight of the rifle. We all have rifles we wish could talk. This is one more.
