Am I missing something?

Besides the grey matter between my ears that is.

I have a Winder high wall with a coil spring action and the 6 o'clock extractor.  It has the ejector spring and screw but it does nothing.  Looking at the diagram in the DeHass book they show 2 pieces labeled #20.  I have the spring but not the other.  What am I missing?

Thanks

Jack

Winchester went to the wire loop spring as a replacement for the leaf version because of the frequency of breakage in the latter.  and maybe for economy's sake as well.

Certainly every .22 Winchester wreck that I've found for rebuilding has the solid spring in two pieces (or the back still attached to the frame with the screw and the business end nowhere in sight) when I take it apart.

So then it is an either/or.  When viewing from the breech, there doesn't seem to be any interaction with the spring and the extractor.  The extractor works fine but there is to 'ejection'.

The little hump on the forward side is where the spring pushes. It's an over center thing. The extractor should snap over ( under ) the spring when the breach is closed and then snap the extractor to the rear when the breach block is lowered.

Jack,
Make sure the spring is seated in it’s mortise on the face of the receiver. Mine wasn’t working and I discovered it was pinched between the head of the screw and the edge of its mortise. After seating it properly, the cases pop right out.

I will have to look closer.  It appears that the extractor does not even touch the spring.

On my Winder action I had to mill out a section of the screw, #19,  to be able to fit a heavier barrel. The screw looked like a bite out of an apple and the barrel diameter at the breech was around 1.063”.

Luckily the barrel on mine is in great shape.  The butt plate had a poor attempt to fill what I assume was a compartment.  I found a standard replacement which is coming from eBay. I am not sure if all the parts are original or not or it was built at the factory as is.  The barrel has both dovetails for a flat spring hanger and a forend hanger as well and even had the latter installed. The hammer has a fly and the sear is slotted for a fly but it has a standard trigger and knockoff spring.  It has been drilled and tapped for scope mounts and I shoot it with a 6x Wollensak scope.

Jack,
My Highwall musket also has the forend hanger installed, but no dovetail for a flat spring block. I’m pretty sure the barrel is original to the rifle.

Mine has a 1914 serial number.  I wonder if it was easier to use barrels that were already machined for flat springs.

I looked more closely at the spring and noticed that it was not sitting all the way forward (towards the bottom on the receiver).  By insuring that it was in the proper position, it engages the extractor and makes it into an EJECTOR.

Thanks all for the help.
