30-30 Fixed Ammo GC load

It's been so long since I've loaded GC loads in the  30-30 I'm out of touch to give advice. I used to use 16g 4759 and the RCBS 180FN with great success but that powder is gone and 5744 is just $$$$!.
A new or shooter in our club  I'm.helping out has H4198 and  H4227 as his choices and besides just quoting data from manuals I'd like some data from an end user here.I'm casting him the RCBS 180 FN and  30-180 SP.
Shooting in a single shot Savage 219

Thanks

I too have relied on 15-16gr. 4759/180GC as my standard .30-30 fixed load, and still do because of the foresight-inspired stash of 4759 I have. But, I've also employed 4198 in 17 and 18 grain doses (depending on exactly which 180 or 190 grain bullet du jour) to the same effect, but not quite the same sterling accuracy that good old 4759 returns. Hope this helps.

Been threatening to employ 3031 of Lyman manual starting load fame for the same velocity/pressure level as above but haven't gotten around to it.

been a long time since I reloaded any .30-30, and back when I did it was in my Marlin 1893 in .30-30 chamber. I used a GC 180 and 9.0 grs. of Red Dot shotgun powder that was just under 1400 fps, and was not just accurate, but also took mule deer easily.
I never tried 2400, so no proven data for it.

I had one of those a few years ago I bought at auction but could never get it to shoot. It would shoot minute of pie plate at 100 yards. Kept it a while then it went its merry way.

George,
I've done some work with the 30/30, with a 219 and a 340 Savage.

In the 219, I used 14.5 gr 4227. In general you can use 4227 gr for gr with 4759, with good results and I think your 16 gr load of 4759 might do as well with 4227.

I also think that a bore rider would be much more accurate than those RCBS's. I got 1.25 groups using surplus H380 in a 30° shoulder 30/30 Imp @ 2000+ fps, with a NEI 190 gr bore rider, in that 340 BUT, I also rethroated it for cast bullets.

2520 is also a good hivel powder for the 30/30 and cast bullets and set many CBA records by our friends Cliff & Griz. But, again, their rifles were throated.

Frank, I've gotten excellent results with your old NOE design 309-169FN in a .30-30 M54 Winchester, as well as '03 Springfields. Even though essentially a spitzer it has enough bore riding surface ahead of the top band that when cast hard and driven moderately it resists the slumping that's endemic to cast spitzers. 16gr. 4759 in the .30-30 and 18gr. 4759 in .30-06 yields well under sub-MOA when the rifle gods are smiling on me. It's one of my top 5 favorite .30 molds.

I load a 173gr gas checked #311041 with 18gr of A5744 for a mild shooting load and 22gr for a little more "umph". Both extremely accurate in my 1950 Winchester 94 with a 20" barrel.

Around Dodge City and the territories out west, there's only one way to deal with the killers and the spoilers, and that's with a U.S. Marshall and the smell of...Gunsmoke.

Is Lovex available there? D 060 is a direct replacement for 5744.
