Hey mods, how about a new thread "Off Topic" for anything that does not fit in "General Discussions"?

Had one for years.  It was hard for some folks to follow rules. Turned in to playground squabble that cast a poor light.     I do miss some of it, but am glad it is gone.  We are a more polite forum without it.

Agree.   It could be entertaining, but somehow got out of hand.... I think we have been better without it.......

One of the things I like the best about this forum is it doesn't have an Off Topic area. I like that we talk guns and not what we had for dinner, or other off topic stuff. Lots of other forums to join and discuss cooking or any number of other non gun topics.

It'll inevitably devolve to politics, and we know where that went.

I agree the forum is better off without it.

I would also like to thank the Moderators for keeping it civil here.  Another forum I visit almost daily has great information, but nearly every thread, at some point, moves to political and/or member abuse, with no correction from the Moderators.

When I decided to get back into photography after the advent of digital SLRs, I frequently a forum that was segmented in an equipment section by brand.  I was amazed by how nasty some posters could be in their criticism of certain brands and models.  I don’t think there was much moderation and it showed.  Unfortunately the $2500 camera I bought back then is obsolete and not worth much. The lens has some value but the body is not worth shipping charges.

My experience with off-topic threads is very limited. The Vintage Mustang Forum has several threads that are focused on cooking, knives, travel etc. that have not devolved into politics. The mods seem to have a tight rein on it. I have seen a couple of warnings, conversations locked, and users banned over the past three years but very rare. Actually, I think warnings to oldtimers to be nice to the new guys are more frequent than anything else. Once in a while there have been posters blocked but for the most part the forum as a whole also enjoys those threads.

The Cobra forum (Ford Cobra) on the other hand is so shut down I got banned as a spammer when I first tried to join. The problem was they did not have an introduction thread. I searched and found a thread that seems liked where to do a first post. I posted but the previous poster was banned and somehow a mod decided I was the same person and banned me. I tried to make contact with the mods but nothing worked, tried using different emails...

Of course the owner(s) of this forum are free to do what they will, just thought there was room for a little "Ablenkung" (distraction)

Depending on the camera and if it has a screen, it might make a dandy spotting scope that you wouldn’t have to change positions to see the target.

On a small sensor digital camera, a 500mm lens is only about 16X.  My Canon 20D body only has a small screen and would be unacceptable for spotting holes at 200 yds.
