Always one to experiment, I thought a 28/20 would make a nice round. Basically a shortened 25/20ss cartridge necked up to 28cal. I recently chambered a 28cal, 12 twist barrel that I had earlier fit to my 44 1/2 Stevens. I have been trying a lot of powder/load combo’s and finally hit a keeper. I am breechseating the Mos 28BS bullet. Prior to the 4759 load, 4198 was showing a lot of promise. A very fun mild load for the 44 1/2. A quarter covers 8/10 shots at 200yds……Damn flyers!

This barrel was purchased off the forum a couple years ago. He thought it was a Montana Rifleman barrel. My 25/20SS chamber reamer is a live pilot so it was easy to bump the pilot up to 7mm. I had Manson modify a 7mm neck and throater to a .303” neck. Freebore is .140” long at .2875”….same as the baseband on the .28 BS Mos mold. I was going to chamber a 28/35(25/35wcf necked up) but thought I would try this smaller cartridge first. Im glad I did. Very easy to load the smaller cartridge over the hammer. Very fun to shoot!

At 20:1 it drops at 150.4gr. The mold is sold as a 140gr. Same mold as CPA sells.

I have temporary shelved my 28 G&H high wall project. The case is a Gussenhoven design using a slightly shortened 30-30 case straight tapered to 28. The barrel is a heavy RKS gain twist ending at 9.5 (9?). It would shoot ok but not match level then get worse the next outing. I picked up a MOS mould that is showing promise so I will likely reinstall the barrel and work on it some more now that I have a comfortable primer supply. My new Garmin chronograph should help pin down the issues as well. Good luck with your project.

Sounds like the .28 Schwartz. Wayne had me about talked into trying it long ago but then I got sidetracked.

Sorry Jack,
I forgot about your question concerning dims! I will put calipers to a couple cases later today. I used a standard live pilot 25/20ss Manson reamer with a 7mm pilot installed. After Chambering the body, I ran a neck & throater in to 1.625” allowing the use of full length 25/20ss cases. The neck portion of this reamer was modified to .303”. My original intent with this endeavor was to utilize shortened/damaged 25/20ss cases making them useable again. My dozen or so cases are trimmed to 1.580”. I am only breechseating.

Last and best group of the day! I had been hoping floral foam wads would work with the same 4759 load but they didn't. Changing nothing else, I went back to the Bicycle brand playing card wads and shot this 200yd. group after half a dozen 2-3” groups with the floral foam. A good way to end the day.

Getting ready for this coming weekends shoot in Eu Claire, I figured I better use some official targets in practice from now till then. I shot this 246 this morning and the next (2) were both 243’s. Very pleased at how well the 28/20SS is working out. Hopefully, we have decent Wx for the ASSRA shoot.
