Winchester stock finish

A while back I seen someone selling stock finish that came in a jar. They advertised it to be the same color as the original Winchester stock finish. Any ideas where I can purchase some?

French Red stain sold by Brownells is one I've heard of using.

I'm using a blend of about 4 different Minwax stains it took a lot of trial and error but it matches great now. Thankfully when I was done mixing I have about a pint. That should last me for my lifetime which is good because I doubt I could do it again.

A few years ago (IIRC) the folks at Cody Ballard recommended a stain called Tapadera's N35, I bought a bottle of it and it matches the Winchester normal quite well.  I'm not seeing a link for it in existence any longer, here's what the bottle looks like.

The two guys who made and sold Tapaderas quit, and based on their age when I bought it from them at a local gun show I'd guess they aren't with us anymore. Haven't seen them in many years, but N35 was a perfect match, and wish someone had kept it going.

Not Winchester, but if anyone admires the shellac finish on old Parker shotguns, it turns out that the exact finish is still being made. I needed to touch up my Parker and with the benefit of the Parker collectors they put me onto the shellac. In business since 1849, Zinsser still makes the exact shellac. It is Bulls Eye Shellac Amber. It might be possible that some rifles with original shellac finished stocks used it also.

Never used it, but  USSR stain seems to have a following for achieving a red tint on military stocks.  See this thread: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Bob, that is beautiful work on that stock, you sure have an eye and the skill to pull it off. The grain structure is outstanding no sense putting all that time and effort into a blah piece of wood.
Cheers Richard
