Why Schuetzen and not Schützen (Read 1607 times)

	I am not throwing knives…… Why do people mix the use words with and without the umlaut (ü) with not using it? As an example, you see Schützen or Schuetzen. Of course, both are proper but when one word is written without the umlaut and then the next has uses an umlaut it strikes me as odd. When writing in German I generally do not use umlauts, I have a US keyboard and don’t know the keystrokes to insert them. When it is important I use the “insert” function but generally go without them. So, the question is: Why would a Verein not use the Umlaut in their name like this, "Schützenverein Mitteltal e.V.". It is the name of my local club in Mitteltal.

	On a Mac hold the option/alt key and type the letter u. release the option key and type a u again. Schützen Jack

What puts my hair on edge is people mispronouncing the word "Angst", especially combined with a Boston accent Although Ballards can be ok I don't believe there is one that can hold a candle to a Gemmer Trapdoor.

American shooters might recognize Schuetzen either way and use the umlaut for it, but they probably don't know which other words use it. I avoid the umlaut because it can be just a silly marketing logo here (and I'm too lazy to look up the Unicode).

	The use of Schuetzen is not a new thing. It was commonly spelled that way in the 1890s and into the 20th century in newspaper and magazine articles about shooting matches. My take, is that was an Americanizing of the German spelling. Of course I could be wrong about that

	An umlaut in German gives the letter a long vowel sound. As an example, the city of Köln in Germany is pronounced and spelled "Cologne" in English.

	If guns had genders a Ballard would probably be trans so a Gemmer Trapdoor would be understandably "embarrassed".

	If you are not a native of Germany, it is nearly impossible to learn how to correctly pronounce a vowel with an umlaut. Maybe this is why.

	I worked for years with a former (rare) submarine sailor who came to our country after the war. He'd been born to a family of a city official in Cologne. He spoke the city's name about like we mostly do- like the scented stuff in bottles. Cologne. Never recall hearing an umlaut come out of him anywhere. Go figger...

Tӧlz is another of those words I can't pronounce correctly for a German ear....

	Ever hear him say "München" instead of "Munich". A lot of the guys when I was at Bad Tӧlz used to just cal it "Munchkin". I can't recall if he did. I'd been around him enough that I remember Cologne because it was spoken of so much. Eventually I ended up meeting several of his family that had survived the war and came to visit him here in the "wild west" where he'd come to stay. Good fellow.

	Back in the day... we used to hit the Oktoberfest in Munich and then when it shut down go to the Volksfest in Bad Constatt (Stutgart). Of course the fest in Munich was bigger an had better Bier IMHO. One of my favorites:
