I came across this one in the Lyman Handbook Of Cast bulets. Early plain base marked 7th N.Y. .30-40.  Not sure if Dr. Hudson designed this or not.  Has anyone came across this mould?

I had one for some years but sold it. If you look at 311278 311279 311280 and 311287. Can you tell the difference?

This is a couple of pages from the Lyman - Ideal handbook. I think they all weigh about 198 grains.

Bob, That is the handbook I looked in and perhaps the nose diameter might vary or one may be two diameter as are the 23-40 versions of the Hudson. All would seem to be off the Hudson design.

It would appear that the chief difference between them is the height of the base band.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

If you look at the 311280 you'll notice the first two bands are the same OD, but forward band is reduced. The 311287 is a stepped band from base to final forward bands.

Ideal 311256 p.b., "An early design for the .30-40 with front band measuring .316 to take up the space between the case and the bore and to seal off the gases".
#311259 has a whopping 1st. band dia. of .327"!, #311268 p.b. has 1st. band .219", ballance .311.  I am guessing these are pre gas-check moulds.
