5744 in 32-40 BP Fixed loads

Inquiring about load info using 5744 in a 32-40 in fixed ammo for an original Stevens 44 with lugged hammer.
Would also be interested in 4227 loads for fixed ammo in same.
I see 4227 info for seated loads but am interested in fixed if anyone can help.

In my experience, and I have a lot, 5744 likes to be run at pressures that are too much for a 44 even with the lugged hammer.  I wouldn't waste any time with it.

OTOH 4227 seems to be right in its' sweet spot for plain base velocities.  Quickload had me using 13 grains with a 165 grain bullet seated .468 deep a decade ago.  Calculated pressure 11,000 psi, breech thrust about 1400 lbf.  (Without the lug, I aim to keep breech thrust under 1000 lbf., better yet under 900 lbf.)

I'll leave it at that, because I've actually done very little with any of my .32-40s.

I have a 7 o'clock extractor 44, in 32/40, that I shot in the '80's. I shot 13 gr 4227 with the Hudson bullet, 12.2 gr 4759 (20 gr by volume on a Ideal measure) and 5 gr 4759 and F BP, to the base of the bullet, with a wad. Those with the same bullet, all fixed.

On a fun outing I loaded the duplex load with Ideal tong tool and got "hunting" accuracy at 100 yds, about 2" as I remember. Peep with a blade front.

I use 14.7gr of IMR4227 with a 180gr RNFP in my 32-40.  Ive also had success with RL7 and the same bullet, that data came from the 50th lyman book

I have not had much luck accuracy-wise with 5744 and only use it for duplexing under black....

There are several 5744 loads listed on the Load Data.com.
It's well worth the subscription price to have a massive amount of data at your finger tips.
5744 is a pretty versatile powder in that it can be used in a lot of cartridges big and small. But the darn stuff has got so expensive now I don't use it much anymore

Thank you all for the great replies.
This gives me Thu gs to think about. I certainly want to keep the gun in good working order. 4227 is sounding like what I may stick with.

I think that 14.7 grains of 4227 in a Stevens 44 is way more than I'd want to try.  Lugged or not.  I might start with 13.0 grains.

Regards,
Joe

My standard fixed load in a 32/40 CPA is 14.5 4227.  Lighter probably more  appropriate for a 44.  Go too light 4227 won’t get complete combustion.

Way to tell shoot a dozen or so. Run a lightly oiled patch all the way through the barrel & out the muzzle. Light the patches corner and watch it burn. Unburned power will “Fizz” soot from burned  powder won’t. Increase the charge gradually until combustion is complete, if the 44 will handle the pressure. Caution with light 4227 charges in large cases is double charging. Use a drop check gauge before seating bullets. Simple rod marked at single charge depth.

Cartridges and actions that are not strong enough for a effective charge of 4227 I generally  to Unique.

Looking at the pressures in the Lyman 50th 3031 might be a good choice for lower pressure smokeless
12.5 aa9 shoots well in my ballard

<ndnchf> has shown us the RL-7 works at pressures that would be safe for a lugged Stevens 44.   Quickload suggests 15.5 grains max with a 185 grain bullet seated .469 deep.  Fill is 55%, so double charges would be less likely.  I have never tried this load; ymmv.
