A few quick pics. Rifle is in 38/55. Yes, the sling is held in place by a screw with a slot cut into the stock to keep the sling flat(ish) to the comb.  Sad

I wouldn't call that rifle rough, other then the stock mod for the sling it's quite nice.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Couple of better pictures.

The way the sling is fastened to the barrel is peculiar to South Australia. A 200 yard ring target (13 Centre) competition was shot with the barrel rested against a post and the front sling "pad" was used to do this.

Where is the slot you mentioned? Is it in the wood?

if you go back to the initial photos and look at the last pic with the screw. The slot sits under the leather and is only as deep as the leather is thick. Steve.

That is a nice old piece. Nothing to be ashamed of there. Slot or no that is a nice rifle.

Someone good with woodworking could find a matching piece of walnut in the scrap pile and splice it in and match the finish to where it would be hard to spot.
