My Sporting Rifle is chambered in 40-70 Rem (or Sharps B.N.). It appears to be all original. I have heard of 40-50 Sharps B.N. also.

A chamber cast would remove all doubt.

I owned a #1 Sporter marked 44CTGS that was chambered for the Remington 44-60 round. The rifle was unaltered from the factory.

Not knowing much about what your RRB is as far as model or estimated year, I would guess it's a 44-77 or could be a 44-90. Is the gun a target model? Measure the rim diameter of the chamber and that would help narrow down the possibilities.

Seconds on the chamber cast. Based on published data, 44 CTG"E would be 44 Long (rim or cenerfire). If 44 CTG"S it should be 44-77 (2 1/4" bottle neck). Take that information for what you paid for it. With the old Remingtons, the barrel marking will get you in the neighborhood but a lot of variance in what they mean. 44S could be 44/77, 44/90 (2 1/4" BN) or 44/90 Special (2 7/16" BN). And as posted, TDW has one in 44/60. Chamber cast in case you want to shoot it. I have a recent accusation marked 44S that I need to chambercast  to determine which of the three it is. If 44/77 or 44/90 (2 1/2" case) I'm good. If 44/90 2 7/16" I will need to break into my 44/90 BN Sharps brass to form some.

Well it’s marked CTGE, so it sounds like it is a 44 long center fire.  Thanks for the input guys!

My original RB No.1 with heavy 34" barrel (all up weight of 13 lb) was marked 44 CTGE and was chambered in .44-77 BN. I fireformed .43 Spanish cases to get it shooting again. I seem to remember that the groove dia. was .453" with a 1 in 26" twist.  A chamber cast will tell the story.

I have an early one marked 45 CTGE and the camber cast is none of the known cartridges (close to a 45-50 Peabody). It would be interesting if there was a meaning to the CTGE nomenclature.

Remington did so many identical markings for different cartridges that it's tough to say one marked .44 CTGE would be a certain chamber for sure. I do doubt it would be a .44 Long RF though as I've not seen this used on a .44RF. I have seen it on .44-77BN, .44-90BN, and .44 Long CF though.
I've also seen all three of those chamberings marked as .44S too. So only a chamber cast will ensure you know for sure what it is.
