25/20SS and 300MP

I shot a couple hundred shots thru the new 10 twist BRC barrel on my #8 Premier Tip-Up in 25/20ss over the course of the last 3 days. I exhausted most of my cast bullet options and was ready to concede that it is a 2-3”/100yd fun gun at best. All my testing was with 4227 in the 1340-1400fps range. Remembering how much John Louis likes 300MP I dug out a pound that I had purchased last spring. The first (5) shots for group bettered any of the 4227 loads. I ended up with 7.9gr behind the NOE 260-117. Bullet was pan lubed and indexed at both sizing and breech-seating. It was a very rewarding afternoon to see this start to come together.

I use 300MP in my 10 twist 25-20 WIN with good results. I get the odd 1.5” groups at 200 yds if the conditions are calm.
Remington primers seem to work best for me.

That is what I use as well.  I am working on my new to me 25 Hornet with a gain twist RKS barrel.  Not as good results so far, but it is early.

The 25-20 is on a low wall.  The Hornet on a high wall.  I can breech seat the low wall without using a wad.  Not the high wall.

I found that using a tuft of Kapok 1/4” off the powder consistently cut the SD in half over the 4227. I was in a hurry testing the 300MP and did not use a wad. Since I have to remove the rifle from the rest for every loading, I can point the bbl up to insert the cartridge. Breechseating a tip-up is a slow process.

The breechseater started out as somewhat of a joke. I kept seeing all the sexy, svelte breechseaters you guys are using and whipped one up with a stove lid lifter to get a rise. Well…that was 3 or 4 years ago and I have since gotten very used to it. I switch out the cartridge to a 32/35 Stevens for another Tip-Up.

Thought I would post something on-topic.  I took the 25 Hornet out for the first outing for it this year.  My new forend is working well.  My new Garmin clocks it at about 1520 fps.
Here is what it can do.  5 shots.

Yes it is breech seated.   I use a thin floral foam wad.  I was using some old bullets form Bob Zimmerman’ estate from the NOE mould that Frank Elliot designed for a  group but here a few years back. I had purchased a 4 cavity aluminum one and Bob had a single cavity brass version which I will be using going forward. There are also some old Paul Jones bullets and the mould that I will do some testing with.  At this point this rifle will be rewarded with a road trip to Spokane this summer while my 25-20 Win low wall will be staying home to help guard the safe.
