Blackhorn 209

Trying to learn so please be patient. Local gentleman was really into muzzle loaders and had multiple pounds of Blackhorn 209 and he gifted them to me yesterday.
Do you/have you used this in any of your cartridge rifles? Results? Currently I have 25-21, 40-60 and 45-70 and found data for 45-70 only.  I'm open to suggestions.
Thank you.

Stuff is terrible!  I'll take it off your hands  Wink

Actually, it is the best BP substitute I ever found. I've used it in 30-30, 32-40, 38-55, 40-65 and 45-70.  Plus 56-50 Spencer and .45 Colt.  The last two had mixed results, but still worked okay.
My ML rifles liked it, too, but requires a hot 209 primer to get it going.
Tried it in shot shells, but I don't think it was intended for that application.

Best loads were 100+load density.  A little bit of compression helps. I always used a 0.060" veggie wad below the slug.  There are published loads you can find online for several BP cartridges (Western Powders).

Leaves a bit of fouling in the bore, but I have shot over eighty rounds in a match without cleaning and never noticed diminished accuracy (usually the last shots being made at 400-500 yds.)

Pick up some Blackhorn Cleaning Solvent; best stuff for quick cleaning.

If you can find it now, it's close to $100.00 a pound  Cry   Consequently, I've had to resort to more conventional smokeless and still trying to get the results I had with BH209.

Tested many of my loads with a Labradar and obtaining SD'd of +/-10 was not unusual.

If anyone knows about future production, I'd appreciate hearing it (not intending to high-jack the thread).

Like I said, I'll be glad to take it off your hands  Wink

Mike.

It does work well with cartridges, but it runs high pressure just like smokeless does. So in the end you really don't gain much over smokeless. Don't use a water based cleaner to clean up

Hodgdon bought Accurate, RamShot, and Blackhorn209 from Western Powders in 2020.  They stated at the time they were going to continue sales/production of all Western’s powders.  The Blackhorn production facility is in Canada, and they produce in batches.  So supply will be spotty until Hodgdon sorts some stuff out.  I figured 3 years was enough, but…

I've used it in many cartridges with excellent results. But due to the cost I mostly stay with the small cartridges.

I have a few lb of it. I bought it about 7 yrs ago, very cheap.

I thought about using it for duplex loads but, never did.

like 4570mike I used a couple cans and found it very uniform.Mine was mainly  in a 310 Cadet and 32-20 Stevens 44-1/2
Accuracy was on par with Swiss powder.
It was just too expensive so I didn't buy anymore.
it shot good in my 54 with patched ball as well.
