Sad to report that Miles Gilbert has passed away. He passed away in his sleep on 28 November 2023. He was author of Mammalian Ostelogy, Avian Ostelogy, Getting A Stand and co-author of Encyclopedia of Buffalo Hunters and Skinners, Vol I and II, as well as numerous professional archeological reports and papers. He authored gun and hunting articles for Double Gun Journal, Black Powder Cartridge News, Muzzle Blasts, Sharps Collectors Journal and various other publications.
His profession took him on excavations and digs to Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico. He also worked in Montana, Wyoming, Arizona and Texas.
He will certainly be missed by anyone who enjoys reading about Sharps rifles, percussion double rifles and double shotguns. I will especially miss his hunting exploits using muzzle loaders.

I felt a big loss when I read that the other day. He was one of my favorite authors of old-timey articles from the Buffalo hunt era. He along with Leo Remiger are a couple of my favorites.

Saw this on the Shiloh forum also, and asked there if the Miles Gilbert Bedrock Stock Bedding was the same person or not? Or maybe some company just paid to use his name?

I wondered that too.

I don't believe they ae the same person. Author Miles Gilbert lived in Show Low, Arizona. He never mentioned to me that he was involved in a product line of any sort.
Miles Gilbert - the trademark - was owned by Battenfield Technologies, Inc., Columbia, Missouri year ago (2007), I don't know for certain who owns it now.

Does MidwayUSA own it or just sell the named products?

My guess is Midway doesn't own it as I see it sold many other places. I've used it for decades, and long before Midway existed. Usually products Midway owns are only sold at Midway.

Read a Miles Gilbert article in my latest BPC News. It may be the last last article he ever wrote. It's about 3 famous black powder target rifles.
One is a Rigby match, another is Henry Fulton's Creedmoor rifle that he used to fire the highest score at the first Creedmoor in 1874 and the third about Yales 1874 Creedmoor Sharps. Yale worked for the Sharps factory. All used in the Creedmoor matches of the late 1870s. Will sure miss his stories.
